Amazon has halved the price of its newest Fire TV Stick 4K , dropping it from $59.99 to $29.99, which, according to price-tracking sites , is the lowest price ever. A 90-day free trial of Amazon Music is included. At this price, it’s an affordable way to get 4K streaming on an older TV or boost the performance of a slow smart TV. And since this stick is only 3.6 inches and is powered directly from your TV’s USB port with the included cable, it can be placed discreetly behind the TV without taking up an extra power outlet.
Despite its small size, it supports 4K streaming over Wi-Fi 6, as well as HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG for improved contrast and color on compatible TVs. What it doesn’t have is Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos audio. If either of these are important to your home theater system, the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus , currently priced at $39.99, is worth considering for an extra $10. Otherwise, performance is largely unexceptional: PCMag reports that apps respond almost instantly , and 4K streams load quickly, with virtually no blurry, low-resolution moments.
The updated Alexa remote is another improvement: it features a more user-friendly shape, a more accessible Home button, and dedicated shortcuts to key streaming services. You can also use Alexa to search for shows, launch apps, or control compatible smart home devices. The software is less impressive: ads and recommendations dominate the home screen, leaving relatively little space for your apps. There’s also no support for Apple AirPlay or Google Cast, so streaming content directly from your phone isn’t particularly convenient. However, if you like Amazon’s interface and don’t need the missing Dolby formats, the Fire TV Stick 4K offers fast streaming and a user-friendly remote for just $30.
