Google Has Removed This Important Benefit From Its AI Plus Subscription.

While ChatGPT was the first to enter the generative AI market, Google has established itself as a major player in this emerging technology race. Many people use Gemini for free, but there are also many paid subscribers who want access to Google’s latest and greatest models. Like other AI subscriptions, Google’s top plans are very expensive, but the cheapest paid tier, AI Plus, is much more affordable: for $4.99 per month, you get access to Gemini’s faster models and an additional 400GB of Google storage.
But if you subscribe to Google AI Plus to access enhanced versions of Gemini, changes are coming. This week, Google is warning subscribers that they are losing one of the key benefits—perhaps the biggest benefit—of an AI Plus subscription, as subscribers will soon no longer have access to advanced Gemini models.
How Google is changing its subscription tiers
As 9to5Google reports , this isn’t entirely unexpected. When Google released the Gemini 4 Argon , the company stated that its latest model would only be available on the AI Pro and AI Ultra plans, not AI Plus. At the same time, the company stated that because of these plans, AI Plus subscribers would soon lose access to all Gemini Pro models. Now, it appears these plans are starting to roll out—one Reddit user shared an email they received from Google as an AI Plus subscriber, which states:
We wanted to let you know about changes to the models you can access with your Google AI Plus plan.
Starting November 13, 2026, the ability to select Pro models in both the Gemini app and AI mode in Google Search will be available only to Google AI Pro subscribers and above. You will still have access to our latest Flash Lite and Flash models, designed for speed and intelligence. Your previous chats started using the Pro model can be continued using the other model.
To learn more about these changes, please see our Help Center article for more information. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time.
Thank you for being a Google AI Plus subscriber.

According to the announcement, AI Plus subscribers have less than a month left to access Gemini Pro models. On November 13, these users will be limited to Flash Lite and Flash in both the Gemini app and AI mode. While previous Pro chats will fortunately remain available, users will need to use one of these less powerful models if they want to continue communicating.
So, access to models within Google’s AI subscriptions now looks like this:
-
Free : Gemini Flash-Lite
-
AI Plus ($4.99/month) : Gemini Flash-Lite and Gemini Flash
-
AI Pro ($19.99/month) : Benefits of AI Plus, plus Gemini Pro models and access to Gemini 4 Argon.
-
AI Ultra 5x ($99.99/month) : The benefits of AI Pro, plus expanded access to Gemini Pro models and 5x usage limits.
-
AI Ultra 20x ($199.99/month) : The benefits of AI Ultra 5x plus 20x the usage limits and maximum access to the Pro models.
I’m always annoyed when companies remove features after customers have already paid for them. If Pro models were always tied to a higher tier, I’d think, oh well, that’s just the price Google charges. But the fact that AI Plus subscribers paid for access to Pro models, and now the same $4.99 subscription is missing a crucial feature for no apparent reason, in my opinion, is despicable. If you ever reconsider your Google subscription choice, here’s a full list of all the benefits of the various subscription options.
