10 Canva Life Hacks Every Canva User Should Know
Canva is one of the most popular tools for creating everything from flyers and business cards to interactive presentations. It’s quite easy to use, even for those with no design experience, but if you’re looking to improve your Canva skills, check out these tips and tricks.
Use the Arrange feature to create the perfect spacing between elements.
If you’ve ever tried to manually align multiple images, text blocks, or other design elements so they’re evenly spaced, and each adjustment resulted in a slight misalignment, the Arrange tool is the solution. This feature lets you group elements, and Canva will automatically snap them into place, eliminating the need to tweak them pixel by pixel. Select three or more elements in your design, click “Position” in the toolbar, and choose “Arrange.” You’ll also find a variety of other alignment and spacing options in this menu.
Upload a CSV file using the Bulk Create feature to generate content from a template.
For unique designs that need to be reproduced exactly—for example, identical business cards for different employees or localized marketing flyers with a consistent design —use the Bulk Create tool to generate and populate a template instead of manually editing each individual file. Bulk Create extracts data from an Excel or CSV file (or a compatible data app, such as Google Analytics) and maps it to form fields in your design. You can use Canva’s AI-powered data mapping feature or drag and drop data fields manually, then preview and generate the design.
Use search by artist or collection to create a cohesive visual effect.
If you find an image or graphic you like, you can filter your search to see more work by the same artist, ensuring all the illustrations in your design look cohesive. This is especially helpful if you’re creating a guide, tutorial, or a series of social media posts that you want to visually coordinate. Hover over the visual element and click the three dots, then select “See more from” or “See similar.” You can also star the artist to easily find them again.
Create a color palette from an image to ensure consistency in your design.
If you’re creating a design based on a photo or image, you don’t have to trial and error to find the right colors for other elements. Canva has a free custom color palette generator that analyzes uploaded images and creates four-color combinations with names and hex codes. You can apply the palette to your design in Canva or save it for later use. If your design already includes a photo, select it, click the color swatch, and find “Photo Colors” in the toolbar to view the palette.
Use the Text Style feature to quickly apply changes to all elements and pages.
Once you’ve decided on the style and format of the text and elements in your design, use the “Copy Style” feature to apply them to the entire design without having to manually select each setting, such as background color, font style and size, text color, and alignment. Select the element or text you want to copy, then click the paint roller icon in the floating toolbar and select the element or text you want to copy the formatting to. Canva also has a “Style Matching” tool , which uses artificial intelligence to match the visual style of existing elements.
Use the Lock Position Only feature to lock layouts for collaboration.
If multiple team members are working on a single Canva file but you don’t want anyone to accidentally move or resize elements while editing text, you can lock only specific elements while still allowing editing of the content. Select the element you want to lock—for example, a text box, image, or graphic—and select “Lock position only.” Collaborators will be able to edit the text or unlocked elements without affecting the locked portions.
Turn on the Gridlines option to automatically create margins and spacing.
Canva’s Grid feature divides your design into blocks, such as rows or columns, that you can use to position and align images, videos, color fills, and other elements with even spacing. Grids also make it easy to crop images or preserve custom filters and effects, even if the images are replaced. You can also change the spacing between grid cells to create even margins. Grid layouts can be found under Elements > Browse . This is especially useful for collages, vision boards, and visual storytelling.
Download your design as a PDF to keep the links active.
If your Canva design includes a URL, users can copy and paste it to visit your website. If you want to add a hyperlink and ensure it remains clickable, you’ll need to upload and share the file as a PDF. Other file types don’t support clickable hyperlinks (and social media platforms also remove links from PDFs). Go to Share > Download > PDF to save your design with clickable links.
Link your Hovercode account to get free customizable dynamic QR codes.
Canva has a built-in QR code generator that allows you to add custom codes to your design using your existing color palette. By default, these QR codes are static, meaning the link is permanent, and you’d have to replace the QR code and distribute a new design if you wanted to make changes. Dynamic codes use a redirect link that can be updated and also track scanning data, such as clicks and location. If you add the Hovercode app to Canva (find “Dynamic QR Codes” in the “Apps ” tab) and link a Hovercode account, you can use up to 10 dynamic QR codes simultaneously for free. After that, you can upgrade to a paid Hovercode plan.
Launch a Canva Live session to get feedback from your audience during your presentation.
When using Canva for group presentations, you can start a live session so audience members can ask questions, leave comments, and upvote other participants’ feedback. Simply select Presentation > Full Screen or Presenter View > Presentation and click Canva Live > Start New Session . This will generate an 8-digit code that audience members can enter on canva.live to join the session. Chat messages and audience questions will appear in the presenter window.
