This is evidenced by numerous posts on the site’s forums, where users claim their watches suddenly display a blank screen with the Apple logo. There appears to be no apparent cause: users report that their watches rebooted while recording a workout, using Siri AI, editing watch faces, or using the Maps app. Many users in this Reddit thread share similar issues with their new watches. Some users have conducted a more thorough investigation, requesting diagnostics for their Apple Watch during the reboot. The culprit appears to be not a specific feature, but a timeout in the Neural Engine, the hardware that processes Apple’s artificial intelligence functions.
Users have tried several different solutions to resolve the issue: one Reddit user simply turned the watch off and on again, and the problem resolved; others tried resetting the watch to factory settings, but were again met with the reboot. The update has a short changelog with only one new addition: “This update contains bug fixes for your Apple Watch, including a fix for an issue that could cause Apple Watch to restart unexpectedly.” Apple didn’t specify what exactly was changed to fix the issue, but at the very least, the restarts should stop.
This update is only for Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 users, so don’t expect it if you don’t have one of the latest Apple wearable models.
