Jack Reacher is one of the greatest characters ever created. For a long time, it seemed impossible to bring this giant to the screen until Tom Cruise made his breakthrough with a couple of films. But we had to wait a few more years to see the perfect adaptation—Prime Video’s “Reacher,” where the enormous Alan Ritchson brings to life a smart, imposing fighter for justice and the rights of the oppressed. If you’ve already seen “Reacher” and are looking for more stories about tough guys handing out free samples of justice, then “The Equalizer” is what you need.

The Equalizer was originally a 1980s television series starring Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a retired spy who uses his special skills to help innocent people achieve a modicum of justice. The series ran from 1985 to 1989 and enjoyed moderate success. Decades later, the concept was rebooted as a feature film starring Denzel Washington. Any Denzel Washington movie is worth watching these days, but this is a perfect fit for this updated version of the character. Washington brings a dark, tense atmosphere to his performance, comparable to that of Reacher —both characters seem genuinely irritated that bad people think they can just do bad things without consequences.
Like Jack Reacher, Robert McCall is a former military man who abandoned his life for a more humble one. Reacher wanders, owning nothing and rootless; McCall works a modest job at a store like Home Depot. Both men try to avoid action—they just want to be left alone. But neither can simply ignore injustice. When they see something wrong, they investigate it. When they see someone being abused, they try to protect them. And if that means taking down entire criminal organizations and killing scores of people? Well, that’s what they’re good at.
Washington certainly brings a ton of charisma to the role, so if you enjoy Ritchson’s deadpan humor, you’ll love his portrayal of McCall—especially those chilling moments when Washington transitions from hilarious silliness to cold-blooded composure. Washington doesn’t have Ritchson’s incredible physicality, but he brings a sense of gravitas to the fight scenes—he may be a little older and less physically fit, but he understands violence just as well as Reacher. Man on Fire (2004)
Denzel plays the “flaming, coiled instrument of justice” so well that he’s often hired to portray it. “Man on Fire ” features some of his finest moments in the role. John Creasey (Washington) is a former Marine struggling with mental health issues who takes a job as a bodyguard for a young woman named Lupita “Pita” Ramos (Dakota Fanning) in Mexico. He quickly bonds with Pita, finding new meaning in life, and when she is kidnapped and held for ransom, he embarks on a single-minded mission, filled with epic violence, to rescue her and exact revenge on those who hurt her. Working Man (2025)
No one plays the “humble guy who can take down an army” role better than Jason Statham. When Hyo-jung makes a rash drug theft, she incurs the wrath of a criminal gang on herself, So-mi, and Tae-sik, who turns out to be a former South Korean military intelligence agent. Tae-sik’s determination to protect the only thing he holds dear leads to a high body count in a film that influenced John Wick and is sure to entertain Reacher fans.
