What Is “Buddymoon” (and Is It Worth Taking)?
Traditionally, the honeymoon has been reserved for honeymooners as a time to celebrate, relax and, well, get busy. This is partly because at one time many couples did not live together and did not have sex before marriage. Needless to say, times have changed — as relationship coach and counselor Jonathan Bennett told Martha Stewart : “As more couples live together and have sex before marriage, the traditional honeymoon as a romantic getaway to focus on sex has largely lost its original purpose. . “.
Enter the new post-marital trend: the group honeymoon or “buddy moon”.
Although this idea may seem crazy to some, many are interested in it. When payment app PingIt conducted a survey of 2,000 people aged 18 to 35 in 2018 , almost half (47%) of respondents said they were or plan to travel with friends to celebrate their wedding. But is it right for you?
You might be ready for buddymoon if…
Whether you have a tight-knit group of friends or a diverse team that you don’t see often due to geographic restrictions, your wedding (and subsequent honeymoon) can be the perfect opportunity for an extended catch-up meeting. As you move away from the wedding blitz year, when you can attend three or more ceremonies a year, there are fewer opportunities to meet up with old friends that you hold dear. (Note: if you are planning to become parents in the near future, your honeymoon may also be your last hurray for a while.)
If you have a wedding planned, buddymoon is pretty much a fait accompli . After you pack, take time off from work, and set up childcare to see you tie the knot, it makes sense for guests to use a few extra days to make the most of those flight prices.
The delay between the reception and the honeymoon can also act as a buffer so that the trip doesn’t feel so “sacred” and more like a trip to an amazing place that creates memories. Keep in mind that if you invite friends, they don’t have to join all of this. You could do half as a couple, half with friends, and just with a small, mutually chosen group of like-minded people. Not all .
Who is buddymoon not for?
For some, the idea of buddymoon is not a starting point. Namely, if the idea of a group for the week after planning and hosting the biggest party of your life is an immediate drain on your social battery. (I raise my hand to this.) If you value tradition and taking your friends along feels too much like spring break, or if romance and unparalleled intimacy are your main goals, stay away. Or if you just want to relax without having to ask six other people where they want to go for dinner.
