Emmy Rossum and Lola Pettigrew are receiving rave reviews for their gripping new serial killer series , Fury , now available on Hulu . The series is based on the 1987 film Black Widow starring Debra Winger and Theresa Russell, but while that film was a stylish but rather formulaic noir, the series adds depth and complexity to both characters: Rossum plays FBI agent Alice Black, and Pettigrew plays her partner, serial killer Katherine Grace. In this version, she’s sicker, more cunning, and more interesting, especially after her motives are revealed. Killing Eve (2018–2022)
Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer star as the two leads of a brilliant cat-and-mouse television series (a style in which The Fast and the Furious also excels), with Oh playing Eve Polastri, a bored MI5 analyst who becomes obsessed with finding the brutal, infamous assassin known only as Villanelle. It’s a professional obsession at first, then a personal one, and it soon becomes clear that the attraction is mutual. It’s more of a spy drama than a crime thriller, but the complex relationship between the two women on opposite sides of the law is just as captivating. Inspector Koo (2021)
Deeply twisted (in every way) Koo Kyung-yi (Lee Young-ae) works as an insurance investigator because being a police officer didn’t quite suit her. However, she has a brilliant mind for spotting patterns and playing games, and she finds herself drawn into investigating a series of seemingly random deaths. It turns out that a young college student named K (Kim Hye-joong) is killing suspicious individuals, staging the murders as accidents and planning to pocket a portion of the insurance money—this sets off an increasingly dangerous game between two equally powerful opponents.Watch “Inspector Koo” on Netflix .
Fall (2013–2016)
The handsome young serial killer Paul Spector, played by Jamie Dornan, appears on the surface to be an ordinary guy and family man, not at all the type one would suspect of stalking and serially murdering professional women in Belfast. London Police Chief Stella Gibson (the always brilliant Gillian Anderson) is dispatched from London to assist with the stalled investigation, which leads her on a hunt for the cunning Spector, fraught with danger, psychological tricks, and bureaucratic complexities. Get Millie Black (2024)
Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James created and co-wrote this acclaimed miniseries, which explores themes of bias, discrimination, and colonialism in the context of a gripping missing person drama. After the death of the missing child she was searching for, Detective Millie-Jean Black (Tamara Lawrence) is forced to leave Scotland Yard but decides to return home to Jamaica and join the local police force. She reunites with her sister, Hibiscus (China McQueen, who received a BAFTA nomination for her debut film role), before becoming embroiled in the case of a Black teenager who was apparently molested by a wealthy white family before disappearing—a case that forces her to work with an arrogant colleague sent from London. The Chestnut Man (2021 – )
Travel to sunny Copenhagen, where Naja Thulin (Danika Curcic) is tasked with investigating the murder and dismemberment of a young woman on a playground. Her best clue is a small chestnut figurine found nearby. When a politician’s daughter goes missing, this tiny chestnut figure proves to be enough to connect the case to the murder of an entire family on a farm nearly forty years earlier. Easttown Mare (2021)
Kate Winslet won an Emmy for her role as the troubled Mare Sheehan, a local heroine during her high school basketball days whose reputation as an adult police detective is rapidly fading. Happy Valley (2014–2023)
This British crime drama is incredibly dark (ironic title!). Sarah Lancashire plays Sergeant Catherine Cawood, a police officer whose daughter committed suicide eight years before the series began after being raped by Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton); she is also raising her grandson, who is also Tommy’s son. Royce is undoubtedly the villain, but the plot is complicated by Catherine’s lingering vendetta, as well as her victim’s criminal connections and his relationship with her grandson. True Detective: Night Country (2024)
The mystery here is a bit more esoteric, if not entirely supernatural, but it’s still quite twisted—and a real game of cat and mouse unfolds between two very different women involved in the same case. It’s also one of the best shows in recent years at dealing with eerie events in an isolated location, eschewing the sweaty, male-driven energy of earlier seasons in favor of a colder mystery involving missing scientists at a research station near a tiny and inevitably remote Alaskan town, where the darkness and cold are practically characters in themselves. The resulting investigation connects veteran police chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Private Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reyes), each with a complicated past and a troubled family life in the present. Murder (2011–2014)
Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman play homicide detectives Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder, who initially investigate the murder of a teenager, complicated by family grief and an ongoing political campaign. However, the series later devolves into a cat-and-mouse game involving Linden and a killer with more personal motives and ties to her past, who turns out to be much closer than anyone could have imagined. Marcella (2016–2021)
It’s the best of both worlds: a British crime drama from Scandinavian noir master Hans Rosenfeldt ( The Bridge ). Marcella offers a brilliant investigation with unexpected plot twists and complex (almost dark) characters. Former London detective Marcella Baekeland (Anna Friel) decides to return to work after her husband abruptly leaves her (he was having an affair), threatening to use her history of mental health treatment against her in a custody battle. Luckily (?), there’s a distraction: the serial killer she pursued 11 years ago appears to have returned, and her knowledge could prove invaluable.
