I Bought an Otterbox Case and It Saved the Screen of My Brand New IPhone.
Over the years, I’ve broken phone screens more times than I’d like to admit. It usually starts with a small crack in the corner, which gradually spreads across the screen like a spider web. That’s why I had to trade in my iPhone for a new one (17 Pro) last month. Only this time, I vowed to properly protect it.
I’ve previously avoided bulky cases for silly style reasons. But as I’ve proven time and again, sleek phones are also fragile devices. So this time, I decided to take a chance: an Otterbox case , a screen protector , and a MagSafe wallet case . If I’m upgrading my phone, why not upgrade my entire relationship with it?
How My Otterbox Case Instantly Saved My Phone
I put my Otterbox case and screen protector to the ultimate comical test. A few hours after securing my new phone in the Otterbox case, it fell out of my pocket while I was riding my bike. Oh well, that’s just the way I am.
I picked up the phone, bracing myself for the worst—and my expectations were met, as the screen protector was indeed cracked. However, the iPhone screen itself underneath was completely intact. That’s because the screen protector had done its job: it absorbed the impact so your $1,000 phone wouldn’t have to.
I removed the screen protector and ordered a new one for $40 . Meanwhile, my phone, under the Otterbox case and now with the new screen protector, fortunately remained unharmed.
The MagSafe wallet has also proven to be a nice improvement. Now my cards are linked to something I, for better or worse, can’t lose sight of: my phone.
I admit, it’s ironic that it took me so long to reach the obvious conclusion: protecting your $1,000 device with a $ 60 case (and a $40 screen protector) is a worthwhile trade-off. Now, when I imagine the next time my phone falls—and it will—I hope that, at worst, I’ll lose another screen protector and five minutes of my time. For someone with my history of broken phone screens, the Otterbox case (and its accessories) is a clear improvement.
