Fuck It, Let’s Drink Pink Gin
How is everyone doing ? Me myself? I am very tired. I also had a mild headache throughout the week because I keep drinking and also because this week has been very, very unpleasant.
I’m not going to list all the reasons this week sucked. Most of them are well known, although some are personal. My point is that I am very distracted and my focus is limited, and even my job – a wonderful job that I am very fortunate with – seems, if not impossible, then at least much more difficult than it should be.
The abstract uncertainty in which we now live is precisely the circumstance that calls for Pink Gin – a gin that is pink in color due to the addition of bitters. (I think it looks more orange than pink, but never mind.) If you’ve ever tried a dry martini and were everything, “this martini could be stronger and also coral in color,” this drink is for you.
Some people make Pink Gin just by rinsing a chilled glass with a bitter, but I like mine with a lot of servings – about six. Since this drink is mainly composed of gin, dilution is very important, so stir it for longer than you think. If that still seems like too much gin, you can add Pink Gin & Tonic, which is a little smarter. Pink gin is traditionally served with a strip of lemon zest (oil expressed in a glass), but you get extra points if you find pink lemons (pictured above). To prepare Pink Gin you will need:
- 2 ounces gin
- 6 drops of Angostura bitter
- 1 strip of lemon zest (ideally pink lemon)
Add gin and bitter to a glass full of ice and stir until very, very cold. Strain in a compartment and pour the lemon rind oils into a glass. Drink. Drink some more then. Maybe if you drink enough this week will be over.
