IOS 26.6 Includes Two New Features, and One of Them Is Key to IOS 27.
When it comes to the upcoming major iPhone update, iOS 27 likely comes to mind. However, Apple is almost ready to release a completely different update: iOS 26.6. Typically, iOS updates released so close to the launch of the next major version focus on bug fixes and tweaks, with all the major changes deferred until the next major update.
And yet, even though iOS 26.6 is a fairly small update, it’s still worth noting because it introduces two new features you should know about, including one that actually lays the groundwork for iOS 27.

This week, Apple released the Release Candidate (RC) version of iOS 26.6 to beta testers; this is the version of iOS 26.6 the company plans to release to the general public. If testers find no issues with the update, we’ll get iOS 26.6 soon. Otherwise, Apple may make some adjustments. Regardless, the features listed below will arrive on your iPhone with the next update.
Getting Your iPhone Ready for Siri AI
The first iOS 26.6 feature won’t appear after installing the update on your iPhone. In fact, most might think iOS 26.6 has no new features at all. But the most important change in the update is crucial for compatible iPhones upgrading to iOS 27.
As it turns out, iOS 26.6 ” optimizes the Spotlight index ” on your iPhone, preparing it for iOS 27. In other words, the update prepares your iPhone for Siri AI . Apple’s AI assistant uses the new search architecture in iOS 27 to function properly. Therefore, if you install iOS 27 without updating to iOS 26.6, it may take a few days for Siri AI to start working properly. By preparing your iPhone with iOS 26.6 now, you will avoid any issues associated with the upgrade.
Of course, this won’t benefit everyone who eventually upgrades to iOS 27. While the update works on iPhone 12 and newer devices, only users of iPhone 15 Pro and newer models will be able to experience Siri AI. However, if this is your case, the new Siri in iOS 27 will work much smoother after updating from iOS 26.6 than from iOS 26.5.2.
Alerts about too many blocked contacts
Another new feature in iOS 26.6 is a new alert that notifies you when you’ve reached the iOS limit on the number of blocked contacts. The exact number of contacts is unclear, but new code in the update confirms the alert’s presence. The alert states: ” Blocked contacts limit reached: You’ve reached the maximum number of blocked contacts. To block additional contacts, remove the blocked contact in Settings.”
The problem is, there’s no documentation confirming what this limit actually is. Furthermore, according to unofficial data, it varies by user. MacRumors reports that some users receive a notification after blocking 20,000 contacts, while others only after 8,000. I’ve seen comments suggesting the limit is even lower, with some claiming to reach it after blocking 5,000 contacts. However, that’s a very large number of blocked contacts, and it likely only applies to users who receive a significant number of calls and messages from unwanted sources.
