Six Ways IOS 27 Makes It Easier to Use AirPods on IPhone.

Apple’s next major iPhone update, iOS 27 , is truly impressive. Currently in beta , the update includes features like Siri AI , new AI-powered image editing tools , and significant improvements for AirPods . Customizable equalization (something users have been clamoring for for a decade) is finally here, along with a new way to customize Adaptive Sound mode and other changes. If you own AirPods, iOS 27 will be a real game-changer for you.
At the time of writing, these features are available in the iOS 27 beta, and they may change or evolve before the final public release this fall. While anyone can install the iOS 27 beta, I recommend at least waiting for the public beta release, which should happen soon. To test the new AirPods features, you’ll also need to update to the AirPods beta firmware (go to AirPods > AirPods Beta Updates ). After installing the latest software, you’ll see the following:
Apple has added a new AirPods settings menu.
The AirPods settings menu has always left much to be desired. It’s somewhat clunky and not particularly accessible, meaning many features go unnoticed by AirPods users. With iOS 27, this changes. While you still need to go to Settings > AirPods to find the settings you need, the interface has become more modern, user-friendly, and compact.
In iOS 27, you’ll see a visual preview of your AirPods and their battery level, along with their name, mode switch, and volume slider. Below that, all features are now grouped into separate sections, such as “Audio & Routing,” “Hearing Health,” “Controls & Gestures,” and so on.

AirPods finally have an equalizer feature.
Most wireless Bluetooth headphones on the market come with a customizable equalizer—with the exception, of course, of AirPods. There’s a basic equalizer setting that applies to the entire Music app, but these options are quite limited and don’t allow for precise sound customization on AirPods. With the release of iOS 27, Apple finally plans to change this .
If you have AirPods with the Apple H2 chip, go to Settings > AirPods > Audio & Routing > Equalizer in iOS 27. Here, switch to Custom . Apple will play a preview of the recently played song with the option to change the equalizer in three sections: Bass, Mids, and Treble. Here, drag the on-screen waveform up and down to adjust the sound to your liking.
Adaptive mode is now easier to configure.
AirPods with active noise cancellation have three modes: Transparency, Adaptive, and, of course, Noise Cancellation. Transparency mode allows ambient noise to pass through, while Noise Cancellation mode blocks as much of it as possible. Adaptive mode falls somewhere in the middle, blending Transparency and Noise Cancellation modes depending on your surroundings.
This sounds great in theory, but in practice, it didn’t always work for me. In my experience, Adaptive Mode lets in too much ambient noise to be useful. For you, the opposite may be true. To fix this,Apple allows you to control how much sound Adaptive Mode lets in , but this option is hidden in Settings, making it easy to miss. Starting with iOS 27 beta 3 , Apple added a convenient slider for controlling Adaptive Sound. In the Listening Mode section of AirPods settings, you can move the Adaptive Sound slider left or right to bring the sound closer to Transparency or Noise Cancelling mode.
AirPods will see some minor changes in iOS 27.
In iOS 27, Apple adds three additional, albeit small, but important, features to AirPods:
-
Name Recognition : iOS 27 expands the Hearing Health feature for AirPods and now supports name recognition. If you have hearing loss, this feature can alert you when someone says your name. Name recognition is now supported globally in over 50 countries.
-
Find Your AirPods with Apple Watch : The AirPods Pro 3 case supports Find Your AirPods with Ultra Wideband. And with the new Find app in watchOS 27, you can now use Find Your AirPods with Apple Watch.
-
Talk to Siri AI directly : If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later, you can talk to Siri AI through your AirPods.
