Netflix Just Introduced a Requirement for Separate Email Addresses, but There’s a Workaround.

Several years ago, Netflix stopped providing free password access, requiring users to create their own accounts, add themselves as a paid additional user to an existing account, or use complex workarounds to continue watching for free. Now, each profile on your Netflix account within your family will also need to be linked to a unique email address.
According to Netflix’s pop-ups announcing the change, this will make it easier for users to sign in and recover their accounts, and will also allow the platform to personalize recommendations. However, some users noted that this will provide Netflix with more data, which the company can share with marketers and advertisers.
How to Bypass the Email Requirement for Netflix
In practice, this change isn’t a big deal for many users—according to the Netflix support page , you can still switch between profiles on your account regardless of which one you’re logged in with, meaning you don’t have to log out and back in with the email address associated with a specific profile. And if each profile is assigned to different members of your family, adding a unique email address is fairly simple. (Child profiles are exempt from this requirement, as they can’t log in directly to Netflix.)
However, some Netflix users use multiple profiles to maintain different viewing patterns. In these cases, you’ll need to register a unique email address for each profile. If you already have multiple personal email addresses, you can associate one with each profile. Conveniently, Gmail’s “additional addresses” feature allows you to create email address variations without registering a new account—for example, [email protected] , [email protected] , and so on. Other providers, such as Proton, Apple, and Outlook, also allow you to use a certain number of email aliases within your primary account.
Netflix may prompt you to add email addresses from your profile, in which case you can follow the on-screen instructions. You can also go to “Account” > “Profiles” > [ Your Profile ] > “Contact Information” in a web browser. Some Reddit users have reported that they can bypass this prompt, at least temporarily, by turning Wi-Fi off and on when opening the app. However, Netflix made this change permanent on June 15, so it may be short-lived.
Netflix account sharing options
Netflix has once again made it significantly more difficult to maintain access for family and friends under one account if you don’t live in the same household. The Standard and Premium plans allow you to add one or two additional users for $7.99 (with ads) or $9.99 (without ads), which is at least cheaper than purchasing a separate subscription. The primary account holder can also share a temporary verification code to authorize access on a device outside the home. However, devices must connect to the home network at least once a month.
