Apple Just Raised the Prices of These Devices by Hundreds of Dollars, but Many of Them Are Still Discounted for Prime Day.

Apple products are expensive, and always have been. That’s no secret. But some have become even more expensive: on Thursday morning, Apple announced a series of price increases on key products in its lineup, affecting Macs and MacBooks, iPads, Apple TVs, HomePods, and Vision Pros. If you’re considering a new Apple laptop or tablet, you’ll find that the market has become significantly more expensive.

Which Apple products have become more expensive now?

Visit Apple’s official website or an Apple Store, and it might seem like nothing has changed. But if you compare today’s prices for the following items with yesterday’s, you’ll notice some dramatic changes :

  • MacBook Neo: $699 (was $599)

  • MacBook Air (13-inch): $1,299 (was $1,099)

  • MacBook Air (15-inch): $1,499 (was $1,299)

  • MacBook Pro (M5): $1,999 (was $1,699)

  • MacBook Pro (M5 Pro): $2,499 (was $2,199)

  • MacBook Pro (M5 Max): $4,099 (was $3,599)

  • iMac: $1,499 (was $1,299)

  • Mac Studio (M4 Max): $2,499 (was $1,999)

  • Mac Studio (M3 Ultra): $5,299 (was $3,999)

  • iPad (A16): $449 (was $349)

  • iPad Air (11-inch): $749 (was $599)

  • iPad Air (13-inch): $949 (was $749)

  • iPad Pro (11-inch): $1,199 (was $999)

  • iPad Pro (13-inch): $1,499 (was $1,299)

  • iPad mini: $599 (was $499)

  • Apple TV 4K: $199 (was $129)

  • HomePod: $349 (was $299)

  • HomePod mini: $129 (was $99)

  • Vision Pro: $3,699 (was $3,499)

These aren’t just minor price increases. On Thursday, Macs were $200-$500 more expensive than they were on Wednesday, and iPads were $100-$200 more expensive. Perhaps most striking is the $70 price hike for the Apple TV, a 54% increase. While Apple’s streaming device is one of the best ( and certainly the most private ) on the market, it’s now one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive, option. I’m not sure how many people will choose it for $199 when there are plenty of alternatives for much less.

However, the price hike itself isn’t unexpected. Apple’s outgoing CEO, Tim Cook, announced last week that the company was forced to raise prices because the global memory crisis was putting pressure on component and product costs worldwide. However, I don’t think anyone predicted how sharply Apple would raise prices. This demonstrates the scale of the crisis and what Apple believes it needs to do to continue growing its profits. ( The company’s market capitalization is currently $4.3 trillion .)

You can still get discounted Apple devices on Amazon during Prime Day.

While this news is disappointing for anyone looking for a new Apple device (especially one of the ones listed above), there is a silver lining: Amazon Prime Day is happening this week, and as luck would have it, a number of devices that would have gone up in price are on sale.

What do you think at the moment?

Not all items affected by the price increase are discounted—some are still available at their previous MSRP—but all of the items listed below are currently significantly cheaper on Amazon than in Apple stores:

Now that Apple has officially changed the prices of these items, their prices on Amazon will likely increase soon as well. So if you’re interested in any of these, I’d advise you to buy them as soon as possible. As today’s price hike shows, it’s impossible to predict when they might become even more expensive.
