The Twins Fell

If you tried using Google’s Gemini AI on Wednesday morning, you may have encountered an error message or two. If so, don’t worry, you’re not alone: Gemini appears to be down for many users (including me). Even if you don’t personally use Gemini, you may see issues on Downdetector, a website that collects user reports of outages across apps, websites, and services. (Note: Ziff Davis, Lifehacker’s parent company, also owns Downdetector.)
At the time of writing, Downdetector shows thousands of reports from users, starting around 6:19 AM ET. The reports started small but gradually increased as the morning progressed, peaking sharply after 8 AM. My guess is that employees on the East Coast began attempting to use Gemini this morning and quickly encountered issues, some of whom contacted Downdetector to report them. Google’s official Workspace status page also lists an “incident” with Gemini, reportedly beginning at 10:26 AM UTC (6:26 AM ET).
As of 11:10 AM ET, Google still hadn’t fixed the issue. The company posted an update on its status page, confirming that users are seeing “Something went wrong” errors in the Gemini apps for macOS, iOS, Android, and the web version, as well as in Gemini in Chrome. While the cause of the issue is unclear, Google will likely restore Gemini’s service soon. Such outages happen from time to time, affecting both large and small companies. Barring any catastrophic issues or widespread outages with the cloud hosting provider, Gemini should be back online this morning. However, if anything worsens, I’ll update this article.
