For the Second Year in a Row, Google Is Holding an “Android Show” Outside of the I/O Conference.

It’s official: for the second year in a row, Google will hold “The Android Show: I/O Edition” ahead of its major I/O event . This suggests the company is once again planning a slew of announcements ahead of the developer conference and, rather than limiting any specific category, would prefer to dedicate the Android-focused portion of the event to a separate presentation. This is good news, at least for Android fans, who will be keeping an eye on any news about Google’s mobile OS.

This also indicates that Google I/O 2026 will focus on Google’s projects beyond Android—perhaps most importantly, artificial intelligence. While Gemini is currently a key component of Android, the company is introducing new AI features and models to a number of other platforms and services. Google I/O may not be entirely dedicated to AI, but it will likely occupy a significant portion of the presentation.

What is Google announcing during The Android Show?

Unfortunately, while we know the event is happening, we don’t really know what Google has planned for this Android keynote. According to the company, 2026 “will be one of the most important years for Android.” This undoubtedly refers to Android 17, the next major update to the Android operating system. Android 17 has been in beta for some time, and while the update doesn’t seem as feature-rich as previous versions, it already includes several notable changes. Specifically, the update allows apps to run in “bubble” windows that can be minimized while using other apps, and it also introduces new options for remapping game controllers in Android . But given that Google is holding “The Android Show: I/O Edition” again, there’s a good chance new Android features will appear in the future that the company hasn’t yet begun beta testing. We’ll just have to wait and see what these new updates are.

It’s possible Google will also focus on other Android news, including Android XR. Last year, the company announced this new smartglasses platform, which adds Android UI elements to the display built into the lenses. The company may be saving this for the main I/O conference, but if it wants all Android news to be unveiled at The Android Show, it could appear there as well.

What do you think at the moment?

When is Android Show 2026?

While details are still scarce, this year’s Android Show will take place a week before I/O, on May 12 at 10:00 AM PT (1:00 PM ET). You can watch the live stream of the event via Google’s official YouTube link here .
