10 Apple CarPlay Life Hacks Every User Should Know

Apple CarPlay brings much of your iPhone’s functionality to your car’s dashboard, allowing you to (safely) control navigation, play music, and send and receive messages while driving. Just like with your iPhone , there are plenty of ways to get the most out of CarPlay. Use these 10 tips and tricks to get the most out of it.
Use this setting to personalize your CarPlay home screen.
If your CarPlay home screen contains app icons you don’t use, you can move the most important ones to the first page and delete those you no longer need. This way, you won’t have to scroll through multiple pages while driving. CarPlay doesn’t have a long-press feature, so on your iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay > [Your Car] > Apps and rearrange or delete apps. There’s also a reset button to return to default settings. Changes will sync with CarPlay in real time.
Other customization options include switching between dark and light modes, choosing transparent or dark icons, and changing the preset wallpaper. These settings can be found on the CarPlay screen itself under Settings > Appearance . Apple doesn’t support custom wallpapers, although there are workarounds using third-party apps .
Use SharePlay or Spotify Jam to create collaborative playlists for car rides.
Even if your phone is connected to CarPlay, you don’t have to DJ solo. Apple Music and Spotify both have features (SharePlay and Jam, respectively) that allow other users to add tracks to shared playlists in real time from their devices. Anyone can join—starting a session only requires an Apple Music or Spotify Premium subscription for the host. In Apple Music, tap the player (on your iPhone) or “Now Playing ” (in CarPlay) and tap the SharePlay icon . Other users can scan the QR code and request permission to join. In Spotify, tap the device icon > “Start Jam” and invite participants using the QR code.
Add iPhone widgets to your CarPlay screen for quick access to information.
In iOS 26, Apple introduced the ability to add widgets to the CarPlay screen, allowing you to quickly view information just like on your iPhone. If an app has a widget for iPhone, it should also be available for CarPlay—although the functionality and display elements may vary on different CarPlay screens. This includes basic widgets like Weather, Calendar, and Reminders, as well as numerous Apple Sports widgets for tracking team and league scores.
To customize CarPlay widgets, go to Settings > General > CarPlay on your iPhone and select your car. Tap Widgets > Add Widgets and follow the on-screen instructions. You can also drag widgets to rearrange them or enable Smart Rotation , which will rotate between multiple widgets.
Turn on voice control to control CarPlay hands-free.
CarPlay offers a variety of hands-free voice commands , so you don’t have to look at the screen to scroll or tap while driving. With voice control, you don’t need to use a code word or phrase, and CarPlay can process multiple commands in a row if you pause briefly between them. There are commands for common interactions, such as opening apps and switching between screens, as well as specific commands for controlling maps and music.
To enable voice control, go to Settings > Accessibility on your CarPlay device and toggle the feature on or off. You can also pause voice control if you don’t want CarPlay to recognize your words as commands: “Stop listening” will disable voice control, and “Resume listening” will resume it.
Turn on “Speak Notifications” to receive alerts about your messages.
Another feature that allows for hands-free operation is “Speak Notifications,” which allows Siri to read incoming messages through CarPlay. For example, you can hear and respond to messages received through apps like Messages or WhatsApp without having to tap the screen when they appear. To enable this feature, go to Settings > Notifications > Speak Notifications > CarPlay on your iPhone and turn it on. You can also choose which apps you want to receive notifications from. Note that Focus Mode can affect which notifications are read aloud.
Pin playlists in Apple Music for quick access in CarPlay.
A handy Apple Music feature in iOS 26 is the ability to pin your favorite playlists, artists, albums, songs, and music videos to the top of your library. This is useful on its own—no more searching or scrolling through your favorite tracks—but it’s even more convenient in the CarPlay interface, allowing you to quickly access your favorite tracks while driving. Open the Music app on your iPhone, tap and hold the playlist, album, or song you want to pin, and tap “Pin [Item]” in the pop-up menu. (To pin an artist, go to the artist’s page and tap the three horizontal dots to open the menu.) Once an item is pinned in your library, you can press and hold to define an action when you tap it, such as playing the album in default order or shuffling the artist’s songs.
Use keyboard shortcuts to disable autoplay.
A common complaint about Bluetooth car audio systems, including CarPlay, is that media playback automatically begins as soon as the phone connects, sometimes playing a random song or video from a rarely used app. On an iPhone, you can try creating an automation shortcut that pauses playback when the device connects to CarPlay. To get started, open the Shortcuts app and go to the Automations tab. Tap New Automation , then CarPlay , select Connected and Run Immediately , then tap Next . Tap Create New Shortcut , then find the Play/Pause action. Tap Play/Pause and select Pause , then tap the checkmark to save.
Set a custom greeting to play when CarPlay connects.
Another quick-launch option is an automation that plays a custom sound or greeting when your iPhone is connected to CarPlay. This could be a favorite song, a specific sound, or even a personalized recorded message. First, save the audio file you plan to use in the Files app. Then, open Shortcuts > Automations , tap New Automation , then tap CarPlay. Select Connected and Run Immediately , then Next . Tap Create New Shortcut , find File , then tap the option that appears. Tap File again to open the Files folder and select the audio file you saved. Then, find Play Sound , tap to add the action under File, and tap the blue checkmark to save.
Adjust your vehicle’s control focus.
iOS has a “Focus While Driving” feature that lets you mute notifications and alerts when you need to keep your eyes on the road. You can set this feature to automatically turn on when you connect your iPhone to CarPlay. This feature is located under Settings > Focus While Driving in CarPlay. If you’ve never set this feature up before, you may need to add it: go to Settings > Focus on your iPhone, tap the (+) sign, then tap Driving . Here, you can also select individual contacts for whom you want to mute or allow notifications and calls, and set up an automatic reply to let contacts know you’re driving and can’t answer.
Add wireless CarPlay support to your wired device.
Wired CarPlay has several advantages : smoother (lossless) audio, built-in charging, and a lower price if you install CarPlay in your car. The downside, of course, is that your device must be constantly connected. To get the best of both worlds, buy a wireless CarPlay adapter that plugs into your car and pairs your CarPlay device with your phone via Bluetooth every time you start the car. Recommended options include the AAWireless TWO+ , Ottocast Mini Pico , and Carlinkit 2Air , all three of which support both CarPlay and Android Auto.
