Yesterday’s Power Outage by Bluesky Was Not an Accident.

Bluesky has been experiencing intermittent outages since early Thursday morning. Of course, platform outages are not uncommon. If you check Downdetector from time to time, you’ll see how often users of large and small websites report issues with the service. In most cases, some bug or minor issue disrupts the system, and it doesn’t take long for the platform’s engineers to detect the problem and release a fix: the outage resolves. But it seems that Bluesky is different—at least not this time.

Bluesky was hit by a DDoS attack.

On Thursday at 7:47 PM, Bluesky posted an update on its official page . The post stated that reports of outages began arriving at 11:40 PM PT on Wednesday (2:40 AM ET on Thursday), and the platform attributed them to a “sophisticated distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.” Bluesky stated that the attack “escalated” throughout Thursday, explaining the intermittent nature of the outages.

Our team received reports of intermittent application outages at approximately 11:40 PM PT on April 15, 2026. They worked overnight to mitigate a sophisticated distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that escalated throughout the day.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean Bluesky was hacked or that user information was compromised as a result of the attack. In fact, on Thursday evening, Bluesky confirmed that it had no evidence of unauthorized access to user data . In a DDoS attack , the attacker floods a service’s network with traffic to overload it and cause service disruptions. It’s as if Bluesky suddenly became the platform everyone in the world wanted to visit to talk about how short videos on YouTube can now be blocked : all that traffic is hindering the website’s normal operation.

As of this writing, Bluesky appears to be fully operational. I have no issues accessing my news feeds on the site, and Bluesky’s service status site reports no issues. However, the company plans to publish another update on the attack and outages by 10:00 AM PT (1:00 PM ET) today.

What do you think at the moment?

Do Bluesky users need to do anything?

At this point, the answer appears to be no. Bluesky stated that it believes no user data was accessed, meaning your account information is likely secure. However, if the company issues a contrary statement, I will be sure to update this article with instructions on how to strengthen your account security.
