Microsoft Is Ending Support for Outlook Lite.

If you rely entirely on Microsoft 365 for work, school, or personal use, Outlook is likely your primary email service. So, it’s no surprise that headlines about Microsoft shutting down its email service on Android come as quite a shock to Android users. After all, Outlook is a huge app, and Android is the world’s largest mobile platform. Why would Microsoft abandon its email service on Android?

That’s because Google isn’t ending support for the Outlook app for Android; instead, the company is phasing out Outlook Lite , a lightweight version of the app designed for less powerful smartphones. As Neowin notes, Microsoft first announced this end of support back in September , so the announcement didn’t come as a surprise. However, the news is that we now have an official end-of-support date. Fortunately, Outlook Lite users still have time to sort things out, as the app won’t officially end support until May 25th.

RIP Outlook Lite (2022–2026)

Microsoft first released Outlook Lite back in 2022. Back then, “lightweight” apps were more in demand , especially in regions with slow internet speeds and for users of low-powered Android devices. This combination made it difficult to run some traditional apps, as low-end devices struggled to handle downloading relatively resource-intensive files on a weak network connection. Thus, lightweight apps like Outlook Lite offered a compromise: developers could remove many features that would otherwise slow down the app, leaving only the essential components for it to run.

But 2026 is a completely different world. Network speeds have improved across the board, as has budget Android hardware. Even a “cheap” Android smartphone has enough computing power to run the apps most people want or need from the Play Store. So, it doesn’t make much sense for Microsoft to maintain two Outlook apps when the main Outlook version is now perfectly adequate for most users.

Outlook Lite likely doesn’t have many new users, given that Microsoft began blocking downloads on October 6th of last year. But there may still be a significant number of active Outlook Lite users. If you’re one of them, you have about six weeks to switch to the dedicated Outlook app for Android. Without taking any action, you won’t lose access to the email in your account, and Microsoft won’t remove the app from your phone, but you won’t be able to access anything in the Lite app itself. The Outlook Lite app even has an “Upgrade” option, so you can save yourself a few taps to get started. Of course, you don’t have to use Outlook for Android even if you have the Outlook email client —there are plenty of great clients to choose from .
