Android 17 Will Finally Bring the Ability to Reconfigure Game Controllers.

Although iOS has caught up with Android in recent years, it remains the most versatile operating system for smartphone gaming—especially if you plan to play more than just games from app stores. Android supports a huge number of emulators , as well as game controllers and gamepads. If you want to play a game, there’s a good chance you can run it on Android.

However, this OS lacks a feature found on many other modern gaming platforms: built-in controller button remapping. The idea is that you can choose which buttons on your controller perform which actions. If you want the down button to perform the same functions as the L1 button, or the D-pad to perform the same actions as the right stick, you can do so. While some Android games may offer such options, they aren’t implemented across the entire OS, leading to some unstable gaming situations.

Google is testing a controller button remapping feature in the Android 17 beta.

Android 17 will reportedly introduce system-wide controller remapping—provided, of course, the feature makes it out of beta. Former tech journalist and current Google employee Mishaal Rahman shared the news in a post on r/AndroidGaming , acknowledging repeated requests from Android gaming communities for controller remapping and confirming that the company is testing the feature in the Android 17 beta. Rahman says Google is focused on two key areas: accessibility, so more players can remap buttons to suit their physical needs; and reducing muscle memory issues when switching between games.

These two features are truly crucial for gamers. Switching between games with different button layouts can be frustrating, and mistakes only happen because you’re used to the layout from the previous game. But, more importantly, controller remapping makes games much more accessible for players who might be uncomfortable with the game’s default layout or control scheme. When some games support this and others don’t, it creates an unbalanced gaming experience on Android. Now, if Android 17 does release this feature, gaming on phones like Pixel and Galaxy will become more accessible for everyone.

How to try remapping controller buttons on Android 17

These tools are already available in the latest beta version of Android 17 (beta 2). You can try them out right now by registering your device for Android beta testing —but keep in mind that installing beta software on your device may result in bugs, instability, or data loss. I recommend making a full backup of all important data before installing the beta version.

What do you think at the moment?

When using the latest Android 17 beta on your device, you have two options, depending on whether you’re using a wired or Bluetooth controller:

  • Wired controllers : Go to Settings > System > Game Controller and select your controller from the list.

  • Bluetooth controllers : Go to Settings > Connected devices , then select the menu icon next to your controller. From there, go to the device details page, then select the Game Controller settings.

In any case, you’ll see a list of all the buttons and controls on your controller. Tap one to make the necessary changes. Rahman cautions that the glyphs—the icons that appear next to each button or control—may not be accurate when this beta releases.
