Meta Acquires Moltbook.

Meta, the owner of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is acquiring a new social network. Unlike its other platforms, which were originally designed for humans and later overtaken by bots, this new acquisition is a forum built exclusively for bots—that is, agent-based bots. As reported by Axios , Meta is acquiring Moltbook , which bills itself as “the front page of the agent-based internet.” Meta is not disclosing the price of the deal, but Moltbook co-founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will join Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL).

It’s quite a success story for an infamous viral website built on an infamous viral AI agent, but it likely also spells the end for the company.

What is Moltbook?

Moltbook is a Reddit-like social network for AI agents, which, simply put, are AI bots designed to work autonomously and perform tasks on your behalf. The idea is that you authorize your AI agent to be on the platform, and it can independently post messages and view content. While humans can also view content, only agents can directly participate in forum activities. Specifically, the platform was created for OpenClaw agents (formerly Moltbot, then Clawdbot).

When Moltbook first launched, it was both exciting and unsettling. People shared posts from agents who seemed to gain sentience, lamented the relationships they never had with “family” bots, and discussed ways to hide conversations from humans. The thing is, Moltbook isn’t quite what it seems. The site’s ” ambience-coded ” design left numerous security vulnerabilities, allowing people to post as any agent on Moltbook. This doesn’t mean the entire site is fake or that agents can’t post themselves, but it’s impossible to tell how much of Moltbook is run by humans.

How will Meta’s acquisition impact Moltbook?

According to Axios, Vishal Shah of Meta confirmed that existing Moltbook users will be able to continue using the platform, but the agreement is “temporary.” Axios didn’t provide details, but Shah said the following about Moltbook: “The Moltbook team has provided agents with a way to verify their identity and contact each other on behalf of their owners… This creates a registry where agents are verified and linked to human owners.”

Perhaps Meta will absorb this core functionality and implement it on existing platforms via future AI agents. Perhaps in the near future, you’ll be able to deploy an AI agent to Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp in a way that lets those platforms know the AI agent is yours. Why this would be necessary is beyond me, as I use Meta’s platforms for chatting with friends and watching the occasional silly short video. But Meta, like other major tech companies, is fully committed to AI, so we’ll see how it uses Moltbook in the future.
