10 Life Hacks Every Meta Quest User Should Know

Meta’s strategy for its Quest 3 and 3S VR headsets was clearly to make virtual and mixed reality as simple, engaging, and accessible as possible, but they may have succeeded too well. All this ease of use came at the cost of significant performance. Casual Quest users aren’t aware that the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor is powerful enough to handle spatial calculations and multitasking comparable to some laptops, and that they can connect their headset to a PC for near-4K image quality that rivals much more expensive headsets. With the right software and a little tinkering with the (often hidden) settings, you can significantly improve the performance of the Quest 3 and 3S compared to their out-of-the-box versions. Below are ten tips every Meta Quest user should know to get the most out of their headset.

If you choose just one optimization method, it should be downloading Quest Game Optimizer . QGO is a third-party utility that lets you manage a multitude of hidden settings for any game or app on the Quest. MetaTrader typically limits its hardware clock speed to conservative levels to conserve battery life and heat, but QGO lets you push the Quest chip to its maximum potential. What’s most impressive is the ability to increase the internal rendering resolution by up to 300%, essentially “supersampling” your games to match the high image density afforded by the Quest 3’s “pancake” graphics. This truly makes a difference.

As you’ve probably guessed, you won’t find QGO in the official Meta Store, and installing it will require a bit of hacking. To get it running, you’ll need:

Connect Quest to your PC.

You can use the Quest 3 not only in standalone mode, but also by connecting it to a PC, either wired or via a virtual connection. This shifts the processing load to a more powerful processor, turning your headset into a high-resolution display and allowing you to use programs like Half-Life: Alyx or Microsoft Flight Simulator that can’t run natively. You’ll be seriously surprised at how good they look and how smoothly they run. There are two ways to do this:

Wired

It’s the best choice for the best picture quality and easiest setup, plus you don’t have to worry about your Wi-Fi speed.

Open the Meta Horizon Link application on your computer.
Purchase a high-quality USB-C 3.1 cable or Meta Link cable and plug it in.
Follow the instructions on your headset.

Wireless

This is the best option if you want the freedom of wireless connectivity and truly reliable Wi-Fi.

For best results, connect your PC to your router via Ethernet, make sure your Quest 3 is operating on the 5GHz or 6GHz band (Wi-Fi 6E), and use the Quest and PC in the same room.
Launch Meta Horizon Link on your PC.
On Quest, go to Quick Settings and select the Communication tile.
Toggle ” Use Air Link ” to ” On ,” select your computer, and then click ” Pair .”
Click ” Start ” and you will start streaming directly from your PC to your computer.

Unlock experimental features on Meta Quest 3.

Meta allows users to test upcoming features in its experimental menu and get a preview of usability improvements, most of which will be coming soon to Quest. Bonus: Quest will remember the location of these windows after a reboot.

Enable Travel Mode on Meta Quest 3

Yes, you’ll look a little awkward on a plane, but the Quest 3’s Travel Mode lets you use the device on the go by creating a fixed boundary and setting the Quest to ignore external forces and use only head movements. Here’s how to enable it:

Go to the Settings menu.
Click on the ” Environment Setup” button.
Click on the ” Travel Mode” button.

Install the Bigscreen beta app to stream videos on Meta Quest 3.

Bigscreen Beta is the primary video streaming app for Quest headsets. It allows you to experience a highly detailed virtual environment—a cozy modern living room, a massive drive-in theater, another planet, and more—and stream video. You can use Bigscreen Remote Desktop on your PC to stream content from Netflix, Disney+, or virtually anywhere else directly into your virtual environment. Furthermore, you can stream content directly from Bigscreen to your personal space, invite friends to watch with you, or watch movies and TV shows with strangers in shared virtual theaters.

Play Xbox games on Meta Quest 3 in mixed reality mode.

If you have an Xbox Live account, you can play 2D Xbox games directly in your VR headset, turning it into a portable gaming console with a 100-inch screen. Here’s how it works:

Download the Xbox app on your Quest headset.
Pair a controller with your Quest. Quest controllers aren’t designed to work with Xbox games, so you’ll need to use Bluetooth to pair a game controller with your Quest. You can use an Xbox controller, PS5 controller, Switch 2 controller, or a variety of other universal controllers.
Launch the Xbox app and select a game.
Enable image passthrough. This will allow you to play the game on any large screen while remaining in the “real” world.
Since the game is running from the cloud, there may be some lag, but overall, in my experience, it’s surprisingly smooth.

Learn WebXR on Meta Quest 3.

WebXR is perhaps Quest’s best-kept secret. It allows you to use a seemingly endless number of games and apps not available in the Meta store, and almost all of them are free. Since WebXR apps run in the browser, all you need to do is open the site hosting the WebXR program in the Meta browser and launch it. If you enjoy experimental small tests and the like, you’ll never be bored. Here are a few examples:

Moon Rider : A completely free and open source alternative to Beat Saber.
Silkbrush : A web version of the famous Tilt Brush that allows you to paint in 3D space.
Above Par-adowski : A surprisingly deep browser-based mini-golf game.

Master the Meta Horizon mobile app

You can do a lot with Quest without even turning it on. The Meta Horizon mobile app lets you manage your game library, download games, change settings, and more—all without wearing anything on your face. Browsing the Meta store in the app is much more convenient, and navigating and changing settings is also easier. The app can also display remaining battery life, check if your friends are online, upload screenshots and videos, and even mirror what’s happening on the headset to another screen.

The Meta Quest 3 headphones are ergonomically sound for short sessions, but wear them for long enough and you realize how much the design struggles between comfort and performance, ultimately forcing you to compromise on both—they’re quite heavy, and the battery life is quite short.
