10 Life Hacks Every WhatsApp User Should Know

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in most countries around the world, and over ten years of using it, I’ve learned a few important tips that make it much more convenient and secure. I use the following WhatsApp life hacks to protect my account, prevent the app from becoming overloaded with notifications and memory, and save a ton of time. If you, like me, use WhatsApp and your entire social circle does, you’ll definitely find these tips helpful to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Use advanced chat privacy settings to block export and Meta AI.
WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, meaning the company itself can’t read the contents of your messages, but this doesn’t prevent recipients from easily exporting your conversations. If you don’t want anyone exporting your message history, be sure to enable enhanced chat privacy in WhatsApp . This feature must be enabled separately for each chat (including group chats).
With Enhanced Chat Privacy enabled, photos won’t be automatically saved to recipients’ phones, artificial intelligence features will be disabled, and no one will be able to export your chat history to their own devices. Please note that people will still be able to forward your messages and take screenshots or screen recordings , but any help is appreciated. You can enable Enhanced Chat Privacy by opening any chat in WhatsApp, tapping on the contact or group name, and going to the Enhanced Chat Privacy section .
You can also block individual chats.
Everyone knows that WhatsApp allows you to lock your app, which requires a password (or biometric authentication) to view your messages every time you open the app. A lesser-known feature is locking individual chats . This allows you to place chats with specific people or groups in a hidden folder. These hidden chats won’t appear in your WhatsApp conversations and can only be found by searching for the contact or group name. Even if someone gains access to your WhatsApp, they won’t be able to open these chats without an additional password or biometric authentication.
To do this, open any chat in WhatsApp, tap the contact or group name and turn on the “Block Chat” feature.
Make your WhatsApp account more secure.
There are a few simple steps you can take in your WhatsApp settings to reduce the chance of unauthorized access to your account. To get started, go to WhatsApp Settings > Account . First, tap Two-Factor Authentication and enable it. WhatsApp will ask you to create a 6-digit PIN, and the next time you sign in to the app on another device, you’ll be prompted to enter this PIN in addition to your other credentials.
When setting up two-factor authentication, the app will also ask you to add an email address to help you recover your PIN if you forget it. After that, you can add a password through the same account settings page if you wish. The final step to securing your WhatsApp account is to lock your SIM card. Go to your phone’s cellular settings and set a SIM card PIN there. This will lock your SIM card or eSIM, meaning that if someone tries to add your number to another device, they will need this PIN to access it. Since WhatsApp requires your phone number for activation, this step can prevent unauthorized access to your account.
If desired, you can also add a password to your WhatsApp backups. Go to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-End Encryption . You can set a password or passkey to encrypt your backups. No one will be able to access your WhatsApp backups without this password, helping to ensure the security of your additional copies of important messages.
Prevent strangers from adding you to groups.
As an active WhatsApp user, I’ve often encountered being added to groups without my permission. It didn’t bother me too much when it was my friends doing it, but over time, strangers started adding me to random spam groups, and I decided to put an end to it. You can prevent strangers from adding you to WhatsApp groups by going to WhatsApp Settings > Privacy > Groups and selecting “My Contacts.” This will only allow saved contacts to add you to groups. You should select “My Contacts” unless you want to block specific people from adding you to groups.
The best way to send voice messages on WhatsApp.
If you enjoy sending voice messages on WhatsApp, I have a few helpful tips to make your life easier. You may know that you can open any chat and hold the microphone icon to send a voice message. But did you know that if you swipe up on the microphone icon to the lock icon, you can release it and continue recording? This way, you don’t have to constantly hold the microphone icon while recording long voice messages. You can also tap the pause button to pause the recording and resume it later if there’s a break in the recording. Once you’re done recording, you can also tap the 1 button if you want your voice message to be deleted after the recipient has heard it once.
I admit, I sometimes ignore long voice messages. Instead, I use transcripts to quickly review them and decide whether an immediate response is needed. Voice message transcription is disabled by default, but you can enable it by going to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Voice Message Transcription > Manual . There, tap “Transcription Language” and select the language you want to see transcripts in.
Archive unnecessary chats and groups.
If you receive too many messages from certain WhatsApp chats or groups, they will always appear at the top of your chat list. To remove them from the main chat window, go to the chat list and long-press the chats you want to block. Then tap “Block.” To prevent these archived chats from reappearing in the main chat window when you receive new messages from them, go to WhatsApp Settings > Chats and enable “Keep chats archived.”
Reduce spam notifications
It’s very easy to get overwhelmed by notifications on WhatsApp. If you’re even slightly social, you’ll quickly find yourself receiving far more messages than you can reasonably handle. I’ve found that disabling WhatsApp notifications completely solves this problem, but it’s not the best solution for everyone.
Instead, you can try a few methods to significantly reduce the number of WhatsApp notifications. Go to WhatsApp Settings > Notifications and review all the settings on this page. Personally, I turn off all notifications for emoji reactions, group messages, and reminders. This way, I only receive notifications when I receive messages from specific people.
Create chat folders to deal with message overload.
Chat folders in WhatsApp are a great way to organize your messages. In the chat list, tap and hold any chat. Then select “Add to Favorites” or “Add to List” to get started. The first option adds messages to the Favorites folder, while the second lets you choose a custom folder name. These chat folders will appear above all your messages, and you can quickly tap on any of them to jump to specific messages.
The key is to reorder these folders to your liking. To do this, hold down the name of any of these chat folders and select “Reorder Lists.” I use this to prioritize messages from loved ones, my meditation group, my running friends, and so on.
How to Fix “WhatsApp Storage Full” Errors
Unfortunately, I know too many people whose phone storage is nearly full because of WhatsApp. If you find yourself in this situation, go to WhatsApp Settings > Storage & Data > Manage Storage to start cleaning. Tap “More than 5 MB” and you’ll be able to view all the files taking up a lot of space on your device. There’s a button in the bottom left corner that lets you sort these files by age or storage size. I used this to identify numerous duplicate files and delete all but one copy of those items. You can also see a list of the chats taking up the most space on your device. Tap each item to manually review the files.
It’s also quite easy to set up a few preventative measures to prevent this error. You can go to WhatsApp Settings > Storage & Data and disable all automatic media downloading features.
Double-check your settings and privacy policy.
It’s important to note that if you use WhatsApp on both your computer and phone, settings changes made on one device may not sync to the other. You should check all settings to ensure everything is syncing correctly.
While you’re checking your account details, you should also check your WhatsApp privacy settings. Go to WhatsApp Settings > Privacy , scroll down, and select “Privacy Checkup” for a quick overview. This step-by-step guide will show you how to enable the most important privacy settings in WhatsApp, and it’s much faster than doing it manually.
