Apple Adds ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini to CarPlay in IOS 26.4.

When Apple released the first beta of iOS 26.4 this week , testers immediately scoured the site for every new feature and change. To their credit, it includes more new features than iOS 26.3 , including an AI-powered playlist generator for Apple Music and support for end-to-end encryption via RCS (finally). But one update went unnoticed because it couldn’t be tested in this first beta: CarPlay support for AI-powered voice assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.

iOS 26.4 will bring AI-powered voice assistants to CarPlay.

As MacRumors noted , the CarPlay developer guide reveals details of this upcoming integration. Page 13 states that the minimum iOS version is iOS 26.4, and that integration with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini is not included. While the documentation doesn’t specifically mention integration with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, it does suggest that voice chat apps are a supported app type in iOS 26.4. Therefore, MacRumors reports that companies developing chatbots (such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google) will need to update their apps to work with CarPlay.

According to MacRumors, drivers will be able to ask questions to apps like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini during a ride, but they won’t be able to control the car or their iPhone. They also won’t be able to use a “password” to activate the assistant (such as “Hi, ChatGPT” or “Okay, Gemini”), so to communicate with the assistant, they’ll have to tap the app itself.

Starting with the latest update, Apple is releasing developer guidelines on how to integrate these voice assistants into CarPlay. On page seven, Apple notes that voice-activated apps should only work when voice features are actively used and should avoid displaying text or images when responding to queries. This is the first time Apple has allowed voice-activated app developers to develop apps for CarPlay. While the company has allowed other developers to create apps for its in-car app, it has apparently placed restrictions on the types of apps that can be developed. Developing Google Maps for CarPlay makes perfect sense, but TikTok is not allowed to offer drivers a CarPlay version of its algorithm.

What do you think at the moment?

Install iOS 26.4 at your own risk.

This feature will appear in iOS 26.4, but will likely arrive in a future beta. Don’t install the beta now hoping to try this feature—though you should think twice before installing a beta at all. Beta versions like iOS 26.4 are finicky, as Apple is currently testing the software for bugs and stability issues. Installing it early risks encountering these issues, which could impact your iPhone’s usability or even lead to data loss.
