10 Life Hacks Every Apple HomePod User Should Know

The HomePod is one of the most controversial Apple devices I’ve ever owned. When it works, it’s great, but when something goes wrong, troubleshooting it can be a real puzzle. This has led to mixed reactions among Apple fans, but I’ve been using the HomePod since 2017 and know all the tricks to make it easier or better to use. Some of these tricks are aimed at seamless operation, but others reveal hidden features . Let’s get started.

Make sure your HomePod has a stable Wi-Fi connection.

Throughout my experience with HomePod, I’ve noticed that it works much better when placed in a location with a strong Wi-Fi signal. For several months, I kept the HomePod in my bedroom, where my Wi-Fi was spotty, and the speaker performed very poorly. Since it uses either the internet or AirPlay to play audio, it requires a strong Wi-Fi signal. If you have a single router in your home, you might have better luck connecting the HomePod to the 2.4 GHz band rather than the 5 GHz band, which has a shorter range.

You can check which network your HomePod is connected to by opening the Home app on your iPhone, selecting HomePod, and going to “Accessory Settings.” The smart speaker automatically connects to the same network as your iPhone or iPad. You can change the Wi-Fi network on your iOS device to change the Wi-Fi network connected to HomePod.

HomePod works flawlessly when paired with Apple TV.

Speaking of improving your HomePod’s reliability, you’ll find that pairing it with an Apple TV will significantly reduce instability. This doesn’t mean you should buy an Apple TV just to improve your HomePod’s performance, but if you have one for streaming, you should consider pairing it with your HomePod for the best results.

I’ve used my HomePod with an iPhone, Mac, iPad, and even an Apple Watch, and I can say it’s a completely different experience than using it with an Apple TV. First, the Apple TV can use the HomePod as the default audio output device, meaning you don’t have to fiddle with software buttons or use Siri to control the speaker. You just turn on the Apple TV, play whatever you want, and the HomePod will work. This may seem like a minor advantage, but it’s actually quite significant. I don’t have many good things to say about the HomePod’s software or reliability, and it was only 100% stable when used with an Apple TV.

Stereo sound significantly improves the sound of HomePod.

I don’t usually advise people to spend more money to get the most out of a product, but with Apple’s HomePod, two speakers are much better than one. If you have a larger HomePod, you’ll probably be fine with just one, but that’s not the case for those who opt for the HomePod mini. Using two HomePod minis in a stereo pair is a much better sound, allowing you to elevate what might otherwise seem like a lackluster audio experience to the level of a more powerful speaker. And this is doubly true if you’ve followed the last tip. If you have an Apple TV, you’ll be truly impressed by pairing it with two HomePods in a stereo pair. It significantly improves your movie-watching experience.

Stream audio from any device to your HomePod.

HDMI ARC is one of the HomePod’s lesser-known features, but once you try it, you’ll never want to go back. Simply put, it allows you to use your HomePod as a speaker for your PS5, Xbox, or any other device connected to your TV. It requires a fairly specific combination of hardware, and even after you’ve set it up, you might have to tinker a bit to get it working properly. This is because it involves at least four different devices from different manufacturers. Sometimes, you might need to manually enable ARC, eARC, or HDMI-CEC in your TV settings, which usually resolves the issue.

ThisApple support page explains everything you need to get this feature working. It boils down to having an Apple TV 4K (second generation or later), a HomePod or HomePod mini, and a TV that supports HDMI ARC or eARC (TV manufacturers typically indicate HDMI ports support these technologies). You’ll first need to enable this feature on your Apple TV, after which your HomePod should play audio from other devices connected to your TV. Please note that for this feature to work, you must add your Apple TV and HomePod to the same “room” in the Home app on your iPhone.

The good news is that this setup is a one-time headache, and once it’s done, everything will work without any problems.

You can chain multiple HomePods together to create multi-room audio.

If you have multiple HomePods of the same type, you can and should try using them for multi-room audio playback. Three HomePods (or HomePod Minis) are enough to cover an apartment of approximately 1,000 square feet, and you can use them to play music in all rooms while you go about your business. If you have a Mac, you can also install the excellent SoundSource app to test out how you like multi-room audio playback without having to buy multiple HomePods first. SoundSource allows you to stream audio to multiple devices simultaneously, meaning you can play the same audio file on regular Bluetooth speakers, HomePod, AirPods, and any other audio devices connected to your Mac simultaneously.

This will allow you to experience the sound of a multi-room audio system, and if you like it, you can use multiple HomePods to get the same result with minimal latency.

Your HomePod also functions as an intercom.

With HomePod, you can send voice messages to other people in your home. For example, you can send Siri the following command: “Intercom, time for dinner.” This will send a dinner reminder to all HomePods in the house. Other people can also use Siri to respond to you, making it an effective alternative to texting.

What do you think at the moment?

To use the Intercom feature, open the Home app on your iPhone, hold the HomePod icon, and select Accessory Settings > Intercom . It also works with Siri on your iPhone, so you can send an Intercom message to your HomePod even when it’s not nearby.

HomePod could become a smart home control center.

Apple’s HomeKit smart home platform may not be as popular as its competitors, but there are quite a few good HomeKit-compatible smart home accessories on the market. If you find the right devices, you can use HomePod to control your entire home. This includes lights, doors, cameras, and many other smart home gadgets. Of course, all of these functions rely heavily on Siri, which means you may sometimes have to repeat commands or encounter the wrong gadget turning on or off.

While working with Siri can be complex, HomeKit is the best option for those seeking a privacy-focused smart home platform. Apple makes every effort to minimize data transfer to external servers and encrypts security camera footage, which differs from the approach of many competing platforms.

Find the right place for your HomePod

In my experience, it’s worth taking the time to determine the optimal placement for the HomePod, especially for the best stereo sound. Apple recommends placing the HomePod up to 25 cm from a wall, but in my experience, it works best when placed 15-25 cm from walls. For the best stereo sound, place two HomePods on either side of the TV, no more than 1.2 meters apart.

If you have expensive wooden furniture, be sure to check whether it’s safe to place your HomePod on such surfaces.HomePod can sometimes leave marks on wooden surfaces, so you might want to use a cork trivet to protect the surface.

Keep Siri data away from Apple.

If you previously enabled analytics data sharing with Apple, your HomePod may send audio recordings of your interactions with Siri to Apple servers. You should check this and disable this feature if you don’t want to share this data. Open the Home app on your iPhone, hold the HomePod icon, and go to “Accessory Settings.” Now, go to “Analytics & Enhancements” and disable all options on this page. From the “Accessory Settings” page, you can also go to “Siri History” and select “Delete Siri History” to clear previously saved data.

Using automated procedures is incredibly exciting.

HomePod also supports automations, and you can use them for a variety of interesting tasks. For about a year, I’ve been setting up my HomePod to play soothing music in the morning and jazz at sunset. You can set these up in the Apple Shortcuts app. Go to the “Automations” section, tap the “+” button, and select “Create Home Automation.” Here, you can customize your favorite automations. HomePod supports actions when you arrive or leave your home, at a specific time of day, when accessories are connected, or when a sensor detects something (such as motion).
