Valve Has Officially Discontinued the Steam Deck With LCD Screen.

There are a plethora of portable gaming consoles on the market right now , but the Steam Deck is undoubtedly a favorite among users . Just as the Nintendo Switch introduced the world to handheld console gaming, the Steam Deck has pioneered the transfer of PC gaming to a portable form factor—even if it goes beyond the definition of “handheld console.” Part of the Steam Deck’s initial appeal lies in its price: in addition to the enhanced model with an OLED display and expanded internal storage, you can also get a model with an LCD screen and a 256GB SSD for a reasonable $399. For less than the Switch 2, you can get a device that plays the entire Steam library and its vast variety of games. It’s a great deal—perhaps even too great.
If you visit Valve’s official Steam Deck website and scroll down to see the available hardware options, you’ll notice something interesting: while there appear to be plenty of Steam Decks with 512GB and 1TB OLED displays in stock, the base model with the LCD display is out of stock. Hardware sales are, of course, not uncommon—other popular devices, like the Switch 2, sell out quickly and are sometimes hard to find. Valve is expected to release more Steam Decks with LCD displays so gamers can get the platform without spending the extra $150 on the 512GB OLED display.
However, it appears the Steam Deck LCD Monitor won’t be returning anytime soon—or at all. While it’s easy to miss simply by scrolling through the purchase links, scroll down a bit on Valve’s website and you’ll see the following footnote: “We are no longer producing the Steam Deck LCD 256GB model. Once it sells out, it will no longer be available.” And given that the product is currently listed as out of stock, it’s safe to say the Steam Deck LCD Monitor is no longer in production.

Valve hasn’t officially stated a reason for discontinuing the Steam Deck console with an LCD screen, but some speculate that the primary reason is rising component prices—specifically, RAM and storage. Prices for these computing components are skyrocketing , which could prompt companies like Valve to scale back their product offerings. Why waste expensive resources on a $399 console when you could instead attract a portion of potential buyers to a $549 model?
Is it possible to buy an LCD screen for the Steam Deck elsewhere?
The short answer? Yes, but I’d advise against it. The most reliable seller of Steam Deck is Valve itself. Otherwise, you could either overpay for your Steam Deck or become a victim of a scam. Take, for example, this Amazon listing , where the model is listed for $459.99. The seller misspelled the device’s name and listed it as “Clothing.” While it might be tempting to save $90 compared to the official 512GB OLED model, I wouldn’t recommend buying from Amazon. Another shady seller on Amazon is offering the 256GB model for $829.99 , while the 512GB OLED model is selling for $899.99 . Again, this is either a daylight robbery or a good old-fashioned scam.
If you absolutely don’t want to spend $549 on a new Steam Deck, you can try the used market, but even there, the situation is complicated. People rarely sell these consoles, and when they do, they usually sell for quite a lot of money. You might have luck on sites like eBay, where I’ve recently seen several Steam Decks with OLED screens selling for around $400. But be careful: buying used items from third-party sellers can be risky. Without proper protection, it’s better to buy official Valve hardware.
