Whenever I buy a new device, it takes me a long time to click the “Buy” button. I stopped reading ebooks on my iPhone and Mac a few years ago, but I waited until this year to finally buy the ereader I’ve been eyeing since 2020. It’s a Kindle Paperwhite , which I bought on sale a few months ago. I love it, so I’m happy to report that it’s currently on sale for Black Friday, and the price is the lowest it’s ever been.
I know what you’re about to say, but buying a Kindle doesn’t mean you’re forced into Amazon’s ebook ecosystem. I successfully deleted my Kindle from Amazon , and so far, everything’s working great. Amazon has plenty of alternatives for purchasing ebooks, and I’ve taken full advantage of the many DRM-free books I’ve purchased over the years. The Kindle Paperwhite itself is also excellent. It’s quite fast and has no performance issues, even when flipping through pages at a time.
It’s waterproof, meaning you can use it by the pool, at the beach, or even while washing dishes. And yes, there was a time when I was so engrossed in a book that I was reading a series while washing dishes. It was a little annoying to have to stop and turn the page every minute, but the best part was, I never worried about my Kindle Paperwhite getting damaged by water.
Yes, there is a cheaper Kindle, but it’s not waterproof and has about half the battery life of the Paperwhite, making it less appealing to me. If you can afford it, I think the Kindle Paperwhite is a smart choice. But there are a few other decisions to consider. One is color. The Paperwhite is available in black, green, and pink, and they’re all currently at their lowest price. Once you’ve decided on a color, you need to decide whether to buy your Kindle with or without ads. I always recommend spending the extra $20 for the ad-free version , but if lock screen ads don’t bother you, you might want to go with the cheaper model.
The third and final question: are you willing to break the bank and buy the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition ? This version features 32GB of internal storage (double that of the standard Paperwhite), automatic backlighting, and wireless charging. At the time of writing, it’s only $5 more expensive than the ad-free Kindle Paperwhite, and it’s worth noting that this version is also ad-free.
Personally, I think the choice is between the ad-supported Paperwhite for $125 and the ad-free Paperwhite Signature Edition for $150. Both are excellent devices, so you definitely can’t go wrong either way.
