What Is Slopcore?

The availability of powerful generative AI programs like ChatGPT, Gemini, and other image and music generation tools has given anyone the ability to instantly “create” any image, video, or song imaginable. Internet users and observers call the flood of computer-generated content washing ashore “slopcore.”
The aesthetic of slopcore, also known as ” AI- slop,” is premised on humans using AI as a collaborator rather than a tool, leaving decisions to machines. It is characterized by a strange, almost surreal, and eerie atmosphere of a machine-like imitation of humanity. Slopcore often touches on deeply emotional themes, but its lack of depth and insight makes it truly unsettling.
At first glance, slopcore photographs and videos appear realistic, but closer inspection reveals distorted anatomy, impossible geometry, and a strange “shine” resulting from overly smooth surfaces and overly perfect lighting. Slopcore music possesses the same atmosphere, but in a sonic form. The instruments sound bland, while the midrange and vocals are eerie, due to attempts to create an “emotional” sound that, however, is detached from real emotion.
Here are some examples of slopcore videos:
Here’s ” No More Slop ” as an example of slopcore music I generated in 45 seconds using Suno , and here are some images of slopcore protest singers generated by ChatGPT and Meta AI:
Notice the details that don’t quite fit together: the guitar strap not attached to the guitar, the sign intersecting with the singer’s head, the standard “AI font” used on the sign, the extra leg on the guitarist’s left—all hallmarks of slopcore.
While generative AI programmers are hard at work creating models that don’t add fingers and limbs, some appreciate Slopcore for its flaws and the unique, unsettling, ominous feeling they evoke. Beyond the sentimentality and hallucinations, AI Slop offers a vision of a possible future where almost everything is created by machines, and few will notice the difference.
