When I first started tinkering at home, I didn’t have many power tools, and I thought buying them would be a waste of money. Sure, I knew they’d make the job easier, but I didn’t think the convenience was worth it. After all, I had two hands. I could do everything the way my ancestors had: the hard way.
I had to sand the old stairs in my house and that’s when I changed my mind forever. The stairs were old but sturdy, and I had to strip layers of paint and rough wood from the treads to save them. Doing it by hand was pure torture. Halfway through, I got up and went to the hardware store to buy an orbital sander. These sanders are great at removing excess because the erratic motion of the sanding pad reduces scratches, creating a smooth surface. After that, I finished the rest of the stairs fairly quickly and haven’t looked back for a second.

It’s cordless, which is super convenient when you’re working on a large area. It uses standard 8-hole Velcro mounting, so you can use whichever sanding pads work best for your project without being tied to some weird proprietary system. And it feels very comfortable in your hand, although it does feel a little heavy after you’ve been using it for a while.
Battery life is good, typically about an hour, although it can decrease when using coarse abrasives or during heavy use. The battery also charges quickly, so I can often work for several hours without interruption, charging the battery while I’m working and replacing it as needed.
