Google’s Latest Pixel Adds Three Major New Features

Google’s September Pixel Drop is here. While the update doesn’t bring a ton of new features, what’s new is clear. If you have a Pixel running Android 16, your phone will look and feel completely different. Plus, if you have the Pixel Buds Pro 2 or Pixel Watch, you’ll get new updates, too.
Google says these updates are starting to roll out today, but will continue “over the next few weeks.” So some of the features may appear on your devices today, but don’t be surprised if they take longer.
Material 3 Expressive
In May, Google announced Material 3 Expressive , the latest design language for Android. Material 3 Expressive includes new UI elements, text styles, vibrant colors, and fresh animations. While it’s not a complete redesign, the update isn’t exactly sleek either. It also includes a number of additional features, such as new iPhone-style calling cards for the Google Phone app.
This new design first debuted on Google’s Pixel 10 series of smartphones , so if you bought one , you’re already familiar with it. However, if you’re still using an older Pixel, you don’t have to wait any longer to try out Material 3 Expressive. Google announced that the update is coming to the Pixel 6 and later, including the Pixel Tablet, starting today.
Adaptive audio
If you have the Pixel Buds Pro 2, you’re getting a pretty big update this month. Google is adding a feature called Adaptive Audio to these earbuds that analyzes your surroundings and adjusts the sound level accordingly. Google isn’t going into detail, but it sounds like it’s similar to Adaptive Sound , which was available on previous Pixel Buds models. Google is also highlighting a feature called “Loud Noise Protection,” which “protects” your ears when there are loud sounds. Again, details are scant, but it looks like the Pixel Buds Pro 2 will limit the amount of sound coming through the earbuds when, say, a siren is passing by.
Google Maps Updates for Pixel Watch
I think a smartwatch could be the perfect navigation device. When you’re on the move, you don’t want to constantly glance at your phone to see when the next turn is. Instead, I prefer to glance at my watch and keep an eye on my surroundings.
That’s why Google’s newest Pixel Drop device makes navigating with your Pixel Watch a little easier. Now you can start a walking or cycling route using Google Maps on your phone, and your Pixel Watch will automatically follow the navigation. So you can set a route on your Pixel, put it away, and go.
