In its latest Android security bulletin, Google is releasing updates to fix 84 vulnerabilities, including two that could be subject to targeted active exploitation.
The September patches address a number of high-severity issues, including denial of service, information disclosure, and privilege escalation, as well as one remote code execution flaw. In its September 5, 2025 patch, Google also fixes vulnerabilities in components from Qualcomm, MediaTek, Arm, and Imagination Technologies. Four of these vulnerabilities are considered critical.
Two active exploits
Two of the bugs fixed this month are zero-day vulnerabilities that Google says are being actively exploited. The first, CVE-2025-38352, is a previously identified privilege escalation vulnerability in the Linux kernel that could allow task sanitization to be broken and the kernel to destabilize, potentially leading to denial of service or privilege escalation.
The second bug (CVE-2025-48543) is also a privilege escalation vulnerability, but in the Android Runtime component. This vulnerability could allow a malicious app to bypass sandbox restrictions and gain higher-level system access.
Three of the critical vulnerabilities patched this month are in Qualcomm components, and one is a remote code execution bug in an Android system component that does not require user interaction to be exploited.
Update your Android device
Android users will see a notification to install these security updates as soon as they become available. This month’s patches apply to AOSP versions 13, 14, 15, and 16, and are dated 2025-09-01 and 2025-09-05. (Installing the latest patch will fix all known issues.)
Note that Google releases patches for Pixel phones and the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) core code, while Samsung, Motorola, and Nokia release updates for their devices.
You can check for updates in Settings > Security & privacy > System & updates > Security update . If an update is available, follow the instructions to download and install it.
