This T-Mobile Security Text Is Genuine, but You Still Shouldn’t Click on the Links

We are constantly bombarded with scam text messages, often posing as trusted organizations, containing phishing links designed to harvest personal information, from login credentials to credit card numbers. Most Americans receive these messages at least once a week, and 20% of Americans receive spam every day. It is recommended that you ignore any unwanted messages and never click on the links provided, so it can be confusing when the company you are doing business with actually writes to you about the security of your account.
T-Mobile users have received an SMS with a link to update their PIN and other account information. While the message may seem suspicious, it is actually legitimate, and you don’t have to click the link, Android Authority reports .
What the T-Mobile Account Security Text Says
The text message from T-Mobile urges users to take immediate action to “prevent losing access to your account” (the urgency is a common scam tactic). Recipients are told to “immediately” update their PIN, email address, and security questions, and the text includes a link to view “detailed instructions” (also a red flag). Again, scammers often impersonate organizations — from service providers like T-Mobile to government agencies like the Department of Motor Vehicles — to make their scheme appear more legitimate.
While the suspicions are obviously justified, Android Authority reports that the link does indeed lead to a real T-Mobile domain, and the text does indeed belong to T-Mobile. However, you can update your account by following the standard guidelines and not clicking on the links.
How to Update Your T-Mobile Account
Instead of clicking on a text message, you can sign in to your T-Mobile account by going directly to the T-Mobile website and entering your credentials there. You can also sign in to your account through the T-Life app. Once you’ve securely signed in, you’ll be able to view recommendations and actions and make changes.
