Wireless Charging Will Become Much Faster

The Qi wireless charging standard has been around since 2010 , and it’s evolved quite a bit in the last 15 years. What started as a puny 5W standard has evolved into a pretty fast 15W standard — not lightning fast, but still fast enough to live up to expectations. And with the advent of the Qi2 standard , the industry adopted Apple’s MagSafe technology. Since then, you can buy chargers that magnetically attach to your devices’ wireless charging coils, so you don’t have to worry about lining everything up perfectly for charging.

The Qi2 standard has been around since 2023, and even when it launched, it promised improvements in the future. Specifically, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), which is developing the standard, said that Qi2’s 15W power transfer would increase in the future, allowing for faster charging. Now, in 2025, it looks like those benefits are finally coming to fruition with Qi2.2, although the vast majority of devices that support it (let alone Qi2) are currently iPhones.

Qi2.2 25W Advantage

Qi2.2, an officially recognized standard since April 2017 , builds on Qi2, specifically allowing for up to 25W of power transfer while maintaining magnetic connections. With the right cable and power adapter, 25W will provide a significant speed boost over 15W. For example, Apple’s iPhone 16 with the latest MagSafe charger and 30W power adapter supports 25W wireless charging and can charge the battery from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes. (15W MagSafe does the same in about 45 minutes .) Not bad for wireless charging.

This MagSafe puck is also a Qi2 standard, not Qi2.2. Once Qi2.2 products hit shelves, we’ll see how well they work with Apple’s current MagSafe platform. (Apple is also believed to be working on Qi2.2-based MagSafe chargers .)

What do you think at the moment?

It looks like third-party Qi2.2 chargers are closer than ever. As The Verge reports , the WPC list now includes Qi2.2-enabled chargers. These include:

None of these Qi2.2 standards are fully ready yet. For example, the UGREEN power bank is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2025 . But it’s good to know that companies are actively implementing the new Qi standard. Hopefully, we’ll see these products sooner rather than later, and with them, broader support for Qi2 and beyond from smartphone makers. Apple supports Qi2 on the iPhone 12 and later , but so far only the HDM Skyline supports the standard on Android.
