Like most dog owners, I’m partial to mine. He’s a Yorkie-Shih Tzu mix who was born with, well, a lot of energy . He’s got an inexhaustible personality, even at nine years old, when the black spots on his fur have turned gray. (His nickname used to be “Puppy,” but in the last year or so I’ve taken to calling him “Old Puppy.” I think it sounds more noble.)

A couple of years ago, Old Puppy’s natural liveliness gave way to something that had always been lurking just beneath the surface: generalized anxiety disorder (or so I assume). This anxiety comes in many forms, but one of the most annoying is a habit of peeing on any available rug or carpet whenever I leave him downstairs alone for, say, four minutes. (I’m the worst!) I use the recommended cleaning solution diluted with water at the recommended ratio (because I follow the rules, and because it works). I also always have a bowl of clean, warm water ready for my Bissell to soak up at the end and rinse out the internal mechanisms. When I say this thing has stood up to the abuse of the last year and a half, I’m not kidding. After all, Old Man Puppy isn’t getting any younger.

While I primarily use this machine for removing stains and pet waste, that’s not all I use it for. After all, I have two teenage sons, too. The Little Green is lightweight and easy to carry around the house, thanks to the convenient handle on top. And it has a long cord, which is essential in my 100-year-old home, which is full of charm and short on outlets. I found the entire unit easy to clean, except for the main brush itself; there’s a plastic piece that I thought would snap off for a more thorough cleaning, but it doesn’t budge. So I usually just rinse that part under hot water, throw it on the top rack of the dishwasher, and it’s ready for another round of cleaning.

What do you think at the moment?

If you have pets who occasionally aim their bodily fluids at soft surfaces (they seem to do it on purpose, don’t they?), I highly recommend this vacuum.
