New to Prime Day? We’ve got the lowdown on everything you need to know . Sales are accurate at the time of publication, but prices and inventory are always subject to change.
Chromecast is gone , but in its place, Google finally has a streaming box that can compete with Apple TV. It’s not as portable as its predecessor, but at under $100 this Prime Day, the Google TV Streamer 4K is worth the price.
With its larger form factor and new processor, it packs a few punch, including 32GB of storage (so you can install more apps), 4GB of RAM, an Ethernet port for wired connections, and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to stream 4K HDR content at up to 60 frames per second. Plus, like the more expensive Chromecasts, it supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The controller even features voice control and can sound an alarm if the connection is lost.
Google TV also gets a little more immersive. The Streamer 4K can connect to Google Home devices, allowing you to watch a video doorbell or adjust your Nest thermostat without leaving your couch. And if you have a pair of Pixel Buds 2 Pro headphones, you can listen to your favorite shows, movies, and music with personalized spatial sound.
In his review of the Google TV Streamer 4K for Lifehacker, writer Brent Rose called it “excellent,” noting that it’s “much faster and smoother throughout the entire process.” Sure, you’ll have to find a place for it on your gaming console, but at least you won’t have that weird bulge sticking out of your TV like you did with the Chromecast.
