New to Prime Day? We’ve got a guide to everything you need to know .
Mid-range TVs have gotten so good in the last few years that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify spending two or three times as much on an OLED TV. That was TCL’s goal: to master QLED technology at a relatively low price, and its QM7 is a perfect example of that. I was able to review and test it myself , and right now the massive 85-inch model is $1,239.93 (originally $1,999.99), an all-time low, according to price tracking tools .
Yes, Prime Day technically starts tomorrow , but the early bird deals are already in full swing. When I see product prices drop to record lows before Prime Day, I often see that price held during the sale (if not back up). In other words, it’s likely the best price you’ll see.
When it comes to mid-range TVs, QLED is currently the best technology before moving on to the much more expensive OLED. QLED may never reach the picture quality that OLED can achieve, but for most people it can be pretty close and much cheaper.
The keyword most QLED buyers look for is “dimming zones” — the more you have, the better the deep blacks will look next to bright highlights. The QM7 has up to 1,240 local dimming zones, which is surprising for its price. It can also get very bright, with a peak brightness of up to 2,400 nits. Of course, you get 4K resolution and HDR support (HDR ULTRA with Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG). As a gamer, I enjoyed the 120Hz refresh rate and 6 millisecond input lag with Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, which kept my Halo matches running smoothly.
Google TV OS is the icing on the cake, as I love being able to cast to my TV without the hassle of my phone. The QM7 was my favorite non-OLED TV I’ve ever tried, and for its current price, it’s the best non-OLED TV you can get.
