If Your Facebook Group Has Been Banned, It’s Most Likely a Mistake

Facebook users are complaining that their groups are inexplicably being slapped with the ban hammer, no matter how innocent they are. On Reddit and X, bird lovers , Pokemon trainers , and interior designers are complaining that their groups are being deleted, seemingly without regard for the content posted in them or how big they are. In some cases, like the aforementioned interior design group, these now-deleted pages had millions of members before they were shut down.

The reasons for the bans vary by group, from accusations of hosting “terrorism-related” content to claims of “nudity and adult sexual content.” Look, I know a tit is a funny name for a bird, but this is going too far.

Just in case you thought that Facebook’s favorite memes or parenting groups actually harbored some sinister secret, I’ll disabuse you of that right now: It’s a bug. There’s no official reason yet (though social media users are blaming AI moderation), but Meta spokesperson Andy Stone told TechCrunch that the company is aware of the issue and is in the process of fixing it.

The news follows recent widespread complaints about Instagram’s “shadow ban,” with site CEO Adam Mosseri attempting to highlight the company’s commitment to transparency in its moderation process. Regardless, it’s unclear at this point when a fix might arrive for the affected Facebook groups, or whether they’ll be restored to their previous status.

What do you think at the moment?

Meanwhile, administrators are taking action. One class action lawsuit is already underway, and multiple Change.org petitions are gathering thousands of signatures . While for some, not being able to connect with like-minded people or see funny pictures may be a minor setback, for business owners, losing access to their audience can have a significant impact on their livelihood.

I reached out to Meta for further clarification but have not yet received a response.
