Google Just Announced Two New Chrome Features at I/O 2025

Google I/O 2025’s keynote was all about Gemini and AI. But it’s nice to see that the Chrome desktop browser is getting some new updates and features, too. While Gemini has been available in every web browser up until now, it was still just a website. Meanwhile, on Android, the Gemini app is deeply integrated into the ecosystem. Luckily for AI fanatics, it can now do so in Chrome, too. Google is also adding some quality-of-life improvements to password management, as the browser can now change your passwords for you, automating one of the most tedious but important security tasks.

Gemini is now available in Chrome for PC

Starting tomorrow, Gemini AI in Chrome will begin rolling out to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., but only in English. Google is starting slowly. The first version will let users ask Gemini to clarify information on a web page or summarize a page. But in the future, Google plans to add more features that will allow Gemini to navigate websites on your behalf and access multiple tabs at once.

Gemini will be available in the Chrome toolbar. Clicking on the sparkling icon will bring up a floating window that you can move freely anywhere. According to a demo provided by The Verge , the Gemini feature can be used between two tabs at once. In the demo, a user accessed Gemini on a shopping page, got a product summary, and asked it a few questions. Then, when they switched to another tab, they used Gemini to compare the new product with the one in the old tab. Later this year, Google says Gemini will also work across more than two tabs.

Google really wants to help you fix your bad, leaked passwords. Currently, when you use Google Password Manager to sign into a website with a password that needs to be changed, Google will ask you if you want to change your password. What’s new is a Change it for me button. When you use a compatible website, you can use this new feature to have Google change your password in the background for you. That new password will then be added to your Google Password Manager. There’s no mention of it using AI, and it’s set to launch later this year, but there’s a catch.

What do you think at the moment?

This is something that websites need to update on the developer side for this feature to work, so it will be a while before you see widespread adoption. Google is encouraging developers to adapt to their system before this feature launches, so hopefully larger websites will catch up before then. Also, while the password change itself is automatic, this feature will always ask for your consent before changing your password.
