Easily Transfer Your Chats From WhatsApp to Telegram
If you are thinking about unsubscribing from WhatsApp for any reason, one problem might be the difficulty of transferring your WhatsApp conversations to another service. People have created some clevertools to help you do this, but Telegram is now launching an official import tool to make the transition incredibly easy.
First, install Telegram on the device you primarily use WhatsApp with. Set up or sign in to your Telegram account and then switch back to WhatsApp. Now you will need to export your WhatsApp conversations – a complex process that requires you to open each one, then click the three dots icon, click More, and select Export Chat .
When asked where you want to save your chats, make sure you choose the Telegram app. When you do this, you will be prompted to select a group to import the conversation to Telegram. You can also create a new group if you like. Then sit back and wait while Telegram processes your WhatsApp chats.
The only thing about Telegram’s import feature is that it cannot link your WhatsApp chats to the exact date they happened. Instead, all your conversations and media files will appear on Telegram as sent on the day you imported them. However, each item will be timestamped with the time and date when the message or media was originally sent to WhatsApp.
This is a bit of a clumsy decision, but you will have to compromise in exchange for such an easy way to transfer conversations from WhatsApp to Telegram. In fact, Telegram also notes that you can use this same process to transfer chats from Line and KakaoTalk. I haven’t heard of any of these chat services, but if you use them, you now have an easy way to switch if you want.
As part of an update that adds this export / import feature, Telegram also allows its users to delete secret chats, the groups they create and their call histories for both sides of the conversation. In fact, it is this “ delete option” that makes Telegram a little stronger in terms of privacy compared to WhatsApp, as the latter only gives you an hour or so to delete what you sent to the group or chat (and remove it from the recipient’s device too).
