This 77-Inch OLED Smart TV Is Now $1,700
If you’ve been hoping to buy a big-screen OLED TV, you might want to consider the 77-inch Samsung S84D . It’s currently marked down to $1,599.99 at Best Buy—less than half its regular price of $3,299.
The S84D uses OLED self-illuminating pixel technology, which means its contrast ratio is virtually unrivaled. The bright highlights pop against a pitch-black background, perfect for dimly lit rooms or late-night movie marathons. And thanks to the absence of local dimming, there is no annoying “blurring” effect when bright spots fade into dark areas. However, while its HDR brightness is decent, it’s not the most stunning OLED display. Large, bright scenes can appear dimmer due to the aggressive Auto Brightness Limiter (ABL), and HDR games in gaming mode suffer because of this.
Still, there’s a lot to like for gamers. With support for 4K at 120Hz, VRR (variable refresh rate) and ultra-low input lag, it’s great for PS5, Xbox Series or high-end gaming PCs. The lack of Dolby Vision support may be a disappointment to some, but its performance with other HDR formats remains intact. If you love fast-paced games, the near-instant response time promises crisp motion with little to no blur. For everyday use, the TV does a great job of upscaling low-resolution content such as old DVDs or streaming shows, and its excellent viewing angles make it ideal for group viewing. Additionally, the S84D’s reflection processing is said to truly minimize glare (even in well-lit rooms).
This smart TV comes with the 2024 version of Tizen OS, which is known for its fast and user-friendly experience. It offers a wide range of apps, making it easy to find the streaming services you want. You can also stream content directly from your phone or play videos via a USB drive. The TV supports Bixby and Alexa voice assistants, as well as a remote control with a built-in microphone for simple voice commands—whether you’re launching apps, switching inputs, checking the weather, or adjusting the brightness. However, when it comes to sound, the S84D reportedly falls short. While dialogue is clear at moderate volumes, sound quality deteriorates as volumes go up, and the lack of meaningful bass results in action scenes or music sounding a little flat.
