This week’s potpourri of bullshit you might not know about will take us from the whaling ships of the 1800s to the hottest hype houses of 2021 with a pit stop in Lenthal to catch a few Pokémon.
Trend of the week on TikTok: sea shacks
Future sociologists and cultural historians will write dissertations discussing why it is the songs originally sung by sailors in the 1800s that are the most trending trend on TikTok this week. But here we are: the sea shacks are a real trick.
The hype about nautical ditties seems to have started with a video of Scottish postman Nathan Evans singing ” Wellerman ” and then exploded. Others began recording their own songs , adding their voices to Evans’ videos , creating parodies, trying to figure it out , and otherwise paying tribute / chopping off and poisoning this almost forgotten musical form. But it really took off with this funny video from Beertheist, which shows 44 seconds as sea shanties first funny, then delicious and, ultimately irresistible.
This Week In Gaming: Pokémon Snap Release Date Announced
Nintendo is loved for transferring their worn-out intellectual property from console to console, making modernized versions of old games, and then releasing much of the same games on new machines. (I’m not complaining – that’s all I want Nintendo to ever do). The beloved Pokémon Snap, however , has n’t made its way to the Nintendo console since the release of the Nintendo 64 back in 1999. Snap missed out on the GameCube, DS, Wii, and Wii U, but to celebrate Pokémon’s 25th anniversary, this is coming to Nintendo Switch on April 30th.
If you haven’t reproduced it during the day, Pokémon Snap is the best option: you are a photographer, and your job (I assume this is your job?) Is to travel photographing Pokémon. That’s pretty much it. You shoot shy pocket monsters in desserts, jungle and other places and your photos get points based on the composition. Definition of the week: “Hype House”
Meme presidential candidate and New York mayoral candidate Andrew Young recently said that part of his plan for Gotham includes encouraging “hype” to relocate to the city. If you’re too busy “having a job” and “living your life” to know what a hype house is, here’s the explanation: Young influencers and social media content lovers move together to expensive mansions to collaborate creatively, post tons of Videos on TikTok and every other annoyance of their wealthy neighbors. Think of it like Andy Warhol’s Factory, but with less heroin and nothing more than Velvet Dungeon.
Hype house was coined back in December, when 19 of the most influential people on TikTok moved into a Spanish-style mansion in Los Angeles and called themselves Hype House. It’s now a generic term for any of the hundreds of similar events across the country, whether it’s a YouTube flock of gamers, the pride of Instagram influencers, or the TikTok aviary. The internet cohabitation trend started in 2014, when youtubers invaded and never left the posh neighborhoods of Los Angeles, and like everything young people do, it’s annoying and horrible. Wait, I mean this is cool and best!
This Week In Internet Cats: Cats Against Technology
Cats have been an integral part of the internet since the late 1940s, and our feline friends did a big show on Reddit this week. Subreddit Cats vs. Technology was originally formed in 2014, but for reasons only known to the gods of the internet, it exploded in January 2021. This fast-growing subreddit features videos and photos of cats sitting on warm laptops figuring out how water coolers work. , or trying to outsmart your automatic feeder . In other words, it has cats in it and cats are pretty good. Especially when they’re online and I don’t have to dig their shit out of the laundry box.
