Bluesky’s Latest Update Makes It Harder to Find Out Your Name

Bluesky , currently home to the best of the ” X-pats “, allows you to use a custom domain name as your username. In other words, you can change your username from “@ prawnay.bsky.social ” to “@ pranayparab.com “. The problem is that your old username remains open to anyone: if you don’t claim it immediately after switching, then another person can take over your old username. This is inconvenient for those who use the same handle on multiple social networks, especially if your account is prone to impersonation.

With Bluesky 1.96, the social network will keep your old username if you decide to switch to your own domain name. The company says it will reserve your latest bsky.social handle indefinitely, so you won’t have to worry about trolls or impersonators taking over your old handle once you’ve verified yourself on your domain. Now that this feature is here, I will switch my Bluesky handle to my own domain name as soon as possible without worrying about someone stealing my original handle.

Update 1.96 also brings many other improvements to Bluesky. To start, you’ll see a new Mentions tab on the app’s notifications page. This will allow you to quickly see who mentioned you in the comments and easily reply to them. The old notifications interface used to display follows, shares, likes, and mentions on one page.

Speaking of replies, with this latest update you can now choose how replies are displayed in Bluesky. You can choose between linear view (the default) and layered view, making it easier to keep track of multiple layers of comments. You can also sort the answers in chronological or reverse chronological order, prioritize the most popular answers, or choose a completely random order.

Finally, Bluesky is receiving unspecified visual improvements, and the service has now been expanded to support three more languages - Khmer, Nepali and Romanian.
