Yes, Bluesky Didn’t Work (and May Fail Again)

It’s not just you: Bluesky has fallen. For a short period of time Thursday afternoon, the website and mobile app returned an endless loading screen for logged-in users.

While it’s not ideal for a social media platform to not load, it’s not the most surprising development if you’ve been following Bluesky’s rise this week. After the US elections, X users flocked to Bluesky in droves. The app, which had been a bit slow to grow its user base over its three-year existence, seemed to explode overnight. It was the #1 free app in the iOS App Store (in the entire store, mind you, not just social media apps), with over 15 million users.

I only noticed the problem when trying to load the site today around 12:30 pm ET. But once the site was back to normal, I saw the Bluesky developers discussing how the site was down intermittently. Samuel (last name withheld), for example, said that the site was briefly in read-only mode this morning while they fixed something, and developer Paul Frazee said that the site is “now back up” and that if it goes down later , “Get a soda, pet the kitten. We’ll hit him with a wrench as fast as we can.”

Since this article was written, the site has come back online and crashed again. It’s possible the platform will continue to crash and reboot today, but it’s impressive that it’s managed to remain so stable at all this time. If you’re thinking about joining a social network, don’t be afraid to start looking for your X followers there , or upload all your old tweets to your new Bluesky account .

However, if you leave X, I recommend that you do not delete your account . Instead, move on to something better and remember what a good social media platform should be.
