Google’s Gemini AI Chatbot Finally Has an IPhone App
Google AI is no longer limited to Google platforms. Previously, iPhone users could access Gemini over the Internet, but now iPhone has a full Gemini app with exclusive iOS features not found on Android.
For the most part, the Gemini app works not too different from the web interface, allowing you to view your past chats with the Google bot, as well as ask it to answer questions, create artificial intelligence, or help with spreadsheets. By using an app instead of a browser, you get Gemini Live.
Live has been available on Android for several months, first launching as a paid feature and then becoming free for everyone. Billed as a way to communicate with Google’s artificial intelligence, it’s similar to using speech to text, but without having to press the microphone icon before each question. Simply say your questions out loud and Gemini will answer them in real time, given the context of your previous questions. Supposedly, you can even interrupt Geminis or stumble over your words without issue, although I got mixed results when testing on the Pixel 9 Pro .
Gemini on iPhone can also access Gemini extensions , allowing it to pull information from other apps, although this was technically already available in browsers. iPhone exclusive app – clever use of Dynamic Island. While you’re talking to Gemini, you’ll see icons on the dynamic island indicating whether Live is still active and whether it’s listening to you. You’ll also be able to pause or end a chat directly from the Dynamic Island, or tap to reopen the Gemini app as a whole. The same features are available on the lock screen, but placing Gemini Live on a dynamic island is a useful way to track the bot while browsing since what it says out loud isn’t always accurate. For example, when I asked Gemini Live to close my chat, the bot said it closed, but continued to listen anyway. If I didn’t have the Dynamic Island icons telling me it was still listening, I wouldn’t have known.
Gemini for iOS follows Gemini’s broader integration with other Google apps, including the ability to use Gemini to report road conditions in Waze or have Gemini curate suggested destinations in Maps . Beyond the realm of artificial intelligence, Google Maps now also lets you search for specific products, so you can type “PS5” into the app to see stores near you that have the console.
