How to Get the Most Out of Google’s New Pixel Weather App
Beyond the Pixel 9 phones, Google has released a number of exclusive apps for the flagships—and while the AI-powered Pixel Studio and Screenshots apps may have gotten most of the attention, the new Weather app also packs a lot of features and is worth a look. V.
The Weather app is now available for older Pixel phones, extending to phones as far back as the Pixel 6, although the AI reviews feature isn’t included (older phones don’t have the Gemini Nano model built-in). what Pixel 9 do). If you have a Pixel 9 or found the app on your old Pixel, here’s everything you can do with it.
Weather data
Before you can use the Weather app, you need to specify the places you want to monitor. These can include your current location, the location of your home, and any other places you want a forecast for. Click the big + (plus) button to add a new location, then search for that location and confirm your choice.
Click on any location to view available weather data. There are many: you have precipitation, wind speed, UV index, sunset and sunrise times, air quality, humidity, barometric pressure and visibility. Tap any data widget to see more details and an explanation of how the value is measured, or tap and hold any widget to drag it to a different location on the screen.
The home screen also provides hourly and 10-day forecasts with temperature readings and icons indicating conditions. You can scroll through the hourly forecast and click on any day in the daily forecast to get a full set of weather readings. on that particular day (including precipitation, wind speed and everything else). Current weather warnings (such as heat or rain) will also appear at the top.
Weather maps with artificial intelligence
Pixel Weather is starting to break out of the norm with AI reports at the top of the forecast (if you have a Pixel 9 phone with a Gemini Nano on board). It gives you a rundown of what to expect based on basic data – you can click on the arrow to see more details (as always, beware of hallucinations ).
Other weather data includes a weather map: click on it to view a radar weather map showing the current rainfall levels in your selected region. Click the play button and you’ll see an animation showing how rainfall is expected to change over the next few hours.
You don’t have to stay in the same place to watch the rain sweep across the map—you can zoom in, out, and pan around just like any map app. If you want, you can check rainfall levels for the entire continent at once, although the location you initially selected will always be marked with a red pin.
Setting up weather alerts
On the location list screen, tap your Google profile picture (top right) to customize the app. You can set your preferred weather units, choose a dark or light theme, and turn off the AI weather report if you don’t like it. For more options, click Pixel Weather Settings .
There are two settings here that make Pixel Weather even more useful: First, you can set up daily weather alerts to arrive every evening in a beautifully designed notification widget along with weather icons. This means that you know in advance what the weather will be like the next day.
There are also precipitation alerts; you can customize them for your current location or any other saved location. Turn on these alerts and you’ll be notified whenever rain or snow is approaching in selected locations—that could be enough to save you from getting wet or stranded on the road.
