Keep a Laundry Basket in the Kitchen
I have a lot of kitchen towels and they tend to get very dirty. But since my laundry basket is far from the kitchen — completely in the bedroom — I often let the dirty boys hand out in the cooking area for much longer than they should, telling myself “I’ll take them with me next time.” time I go to that part of the house (which is very close). ” Then I forget to do this, so a small stack of dirty kitchen towels starts to fold. This is disgusting to me.
I hate the sight of that messy stack of towels – the mess bothers me – but it’s most frustrating because I have been known to accidentally use a dirty tea towel instead of a clean one, and chaos (i.e. mild frustration and possibly mild gagging) ensues. Fortunately, this can all be solved with a small clothes basket.
Keeping a basket for clothes in the kitchen seems odd at first – laundry shouldn’t be in the food compartment! – but with a kitchen wash it’s different. It’s greasy, smelly and often wet and I don’t want it to mix with my local union t-shirt collection. (A greasy rag next to my ILWU tank? No thanks! ) A kitchen basket means you don’t have to go to another room to make sure your dirty towel isn’t being used to wipe down in the kitchen. Just throw it in the basket, grab a new towel and continue your cooking.
Where you put the basket depends on your kitchen layout, but next to the trash can is probably a good spot. Just make sure you don’t accidentally throw your kitchen towels in the trash if they’re not really dirty. (Some disorder cannot be washed away.)
