“Museum Gel” – the Hero of the Trash Drawer That Everyone Needs

When I was little, my mother used some kind of blue sticky material to secure almost everything around our house: my posters were hung with these things. This caused our drawer dividers to be stuck in place. And while it worked, it left behind a blue stain and a sticky texture that was nearly impossible to remove, so we eventually stopped using it altogether and settled on drawers whose contents moved around every time they were opened and closed. I never thought about it again until I saw a much better alternative on social media. This is called “museum gel” and is the perfect finishing touch to your organization and display.

What is museum gel?

This is a clear gel that comes in a jar and can be used to secure relatively light objects. It comes off easily from walls and surfaces, leaves no marks and can even be reused. This is a stronger and more developed descendant of the blue material my mom used in the 90’s. In fact, I’m probably going to send her some. I had never heard of this before I came across a bunch of TikTok videos hyping it up. Here’s a great example:

How to use museum gel at home

I always talk about how important it is to use containers to organize your things into categories. This is especially true for drawers, where you likely store a variety of small items in dividers, boxes, and special organizers . This all works great for separating your categories, but the problems start when you close the drawer, causing everything to move around. If museum gel is anything else, then it is the solution to this problem. A pea-sized amount of gel at the corners of each organizer or container will prevent them from moving around when you open and close the drawer.

But it can do even more: You can use museum gel to easily hang lightweight papers like children’s drawings, or add extra security and straightening power to heavier frames on the wall. This won’t replace nails for holding heavy objects, but it will help some items stay straight and securely attached to the wall. Also consider it for anything you store on shelves or flat surfaces, such as figurines, photo frames, watches, or sentimental or valuable items . For added security, attach it under your candles. There are a lot of possibilities here, and luckily a can of this stuff only costs $11, so you can explore them all.
