Is Discovery + Worth It?

Discovery has entered the streaming war today with the launch of another platform, Discovery +. At this point, a subscription to each streaming service will cost you almost as much as a cable TV subscription, so is it worth adding another one? Here are some facts to help you decide if Discovery + is worth the money.

How much is it?

Discovery + offers a seven-day free trial that allows you to test the service before paying for it. Once the trial period expires, the ad-supported tier will cost you $ 4.99 per month, which is the same price as the Peacock ad-supported tier (if you’re not against ads, that price isn’t that bad). The higher tier of “no ads” is $ 6.99 a month (same as Disney +, at least until they raise prices in March). The service is free for twelve months with a Verizon Unlimited subscription . You can subscribe to Verizon Fios or upgrade to Unlimited to get the same deal. (This offer is only available to new Fios and 5G home Internet customers.) If you already own Verizon Unlimited, simply add Discovery + to your account and you can stream Discovery + for free for a year.

Bang for your dollar

Discovery + has partnered with networks such as HGTV, Food Network, A&E, TLC, Animal Planet, Lifetime and History Channel to bring subscribers access to over 55,000 episodes from 2,500 shows. Along with partner content, Discovery + produces original programs from popular DIY and Food Network stars. Original and exclusive shows include Bobby and Jada in Italy and Hometown: Ben’s Workshop . This means that the new streaming service could be a particularly interesting option for DIY enthusiasts and foodies alike.

For reality TV buffs, Discovery + delivers all the 90-day grooms you’ve been dreaming of. The service will also feature 90 Day Journey, which follows popular couples 90 Day Fiance after the show, and 90 Day Bares All, which reveals content not previously shown on television.

Discovery + will also be home to the BBC Natural History Collection, featuring Blue Planet, Blue Planet II, Serengeti and many more. In addition to BBC content, Discovery + will offer Discovery Network’s home-based nature programming, including Shark Week . Expect exclusive Shark Week content streaming on Discovery + this August.

How to watch

Unlike HBO Max, which finally announced its app on Roku last month – six months after launch – Discovery made their streaming content easier to find . The Discovery + app is available on all major devices , including Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, iPhone, iPad, tablet, Xbox One and Series S / X devices, Chromecast, Android TV, and Samsung Smart TV (2017 and newer). … Unfortunately, you cannot register with a cable TV service provider; you will need to be a Verizon customer or register separately and your cable TV subscription will not give you access.

I recommend using the free trial (set your alarm on day 6 to remind yourself to review and cancel if needed). If you’re hooked, you can pay $ 4.99 and check it out for a full month. Fortunately, the platform allows you to cancel your subscription at any time (if the hype dies down).
