Windows 11 Makes It Easier to Switch Power Modes

When you use a Windows laptop, setting and managing power modes is an important tool for maintaining battery life. Until now, you had to dig deep into the control panel to complete these tasks, which was quite tedious. In the recently released Windows 11 Insider Preview on the Canary channel, Microsoft has made it much easier to configure power modes. This feature was first seen in a Windows 11 developer channel preview build in July 2024, but has now been added to the more stable Canary channel.

In the new version, you can go to Settings > System > Power & Battery to access all the options you need. You’ll be able to select a different power mode when your laptop is plugged in than when it’s running on battery power. The feature is available in Windows Insider Preview Build 27686, which means it’s technically still in testing, but you can sign up for a free Insider account here .

This makes it much easier to access nutrition modes and use them effectively. Power modes effectively allow you to decide how much power your laptop consumes. While gaming, you can set the high performance mode to prevent your laptop from slowing down while playing online. When you’re not performing resource-intensive tasks, you can ask your Windows laptop to take a cold pill and conserve your energy resources. This will help you maximize battery life and is useful if you know you’ll need your laptop for work but aren’t sure when you’ll next be able to charge it.

It won’t be long before these features appear in mainstream Windows. Joining the Insider program will allow you to try them out early, but remember that participating in the Insider rollout schedule means that your computer will be running unstable software.
