If you often wish you had larger text or icons on your iPhone, you’re not alone. Some people prefer microscopic font sizes, but others want big, bold text everywhere. Luckily, there are steps you can take to make your text more readable, while also making everything else more visible.

Increase iPhone Screen Size for Font

The first step to making text more legible on iPhone is to increase the font size. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size . Move the slider to the right to increase the font size in iOS. Many iPhone apps use the system’s default font size settings, so changing them here will also make the text more readable.

If you think the largest font size is not enough, you can increase it even further by going to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Large Text and turning on Large Custom Sizes . You’ll then see additional font size options in the slider at the bottom of the page. You can even set a unique font size for each application .

For some people, using bold text in iOS is much more useful than increasing the font size. Turn it on by going to Settings > Display & Brightness and turning on Bold Text .

Switch your iPhone to dark mode

You can make text and even images more visible by using a dark theme. I don’t recommend this for everyone because some people have a harder time reading white text on a black background, but it works for me. As someone who suffers from migraines, I find it much more difficult to focus on bright screens. Using dark mode allows me to read everything much easier. Turn on dark mode on your iPhone by going to Settings > Display & Brightness > Dark .

Increase the size of iPhone notifications, texts, and icons.

Increasing the font size does not increase the size of your iPhone’s notification banner, text messages, or icons. To do this, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Scale and select Larger Text . Then click “Install” in the top right corner. You will need to relaunch the icon before the changes take effect.

In iOS 18, you can make the app icons on your Home screen even bigger. It works by removing app names from your iPhone’s home screen , giving the icons a chance to grow. At the time of writing, iOS 18 is available in public beta , scheduled for release in the fall of 2024. To use this feature, touch and hold an empty part of the screen and select Customize and then Large .

Increase the contrast to differentiate the foreground and background colors.

Have you ever felt like the foreground color of some menu items blends into the background? To fix this, increase the contrast between the foreground and background colors in iOS. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and turn on Increase Contrast .

If you have trouble differentiating between certain colors, you can also turn on “Differentiate Without Color” on the same page. This gets rid of UX elements that rely solely on color to convey information.

Make buttons more visible

Some people may find it difficult to find the buttons on the screens. Luckily, there’s a handy iPhone accessibility feature that makes it easier to find buttons by underlining them, just like a web page displays hyperlinked text (for example, see the image above where the back button is underlined in blue). Turn this on by going to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and turning on Button Shapes .

Add labels to make it easier to determine whether options are enabled or disabled.

Each switch displays a circle when it is disabled and a vertical line when it is enabled.

Your iPhone comes with a built-in magnifier. This is intended to be used as an accessibility feature, but is useful any time you need to look at something close up. For example, if you’re having trouble reading small text in a book, you can fire up Magnifier and use your iPhone’s camera to magnify it. Magnifier comes pre-loaded as an app on your iPhone. Find it using Spotlight search or the App Library; When Magnifier is open, you can use the slider next to the magnifying glass icon to zoom in on real-world objects.

Your iPhone allows you to zoom in. Those who suffer from low vision will benefit the most from this feature, which allows you to magnify almost anything on the screen. You can enable this by going to Settings > Accessibility > Zoom and turning on Zoom .

Now double-tap the screen with three fingers. This will allow you to scale up significantly. You can also use the three-finger drag gesture to move around the screen. When you’re done, double-tap with three fingers to zoom out.
