This Is the Only Way to Drink Chilled Wine in Public

Wine is a suitable drink for almost any occasion and/or setting—wedding, dive bar, couch—but in the summer, I especially enjoy drinking it outdoors and in public places. Does this make me weird? May be. Or maybe you’re weird too and enjoy a splash of wine in the park. I’m no sommelier, but I know that summer wine is best enjoyed chilled, dammit. And the best way to do this when you’re away from the refrigerator is to use a double-walled, vacuum-insulated bottle.

Forget those soft Kuzis from 20 years ago. These are different times, and I can tell you from experience: nothing keeps cold drinks colder than one of those sleek stainless steel bottles. I definitely don’t think I’m being weird this time considering the number of vacuum insulated bottles available in 750ml sizes. Yes, exactly the size of a standard wine bottle.

My favorite insulated bottles for storing wine outdoors.

Why is it better to drink in public from a vacuum-insulated bottle?

  1. They are careful. I’m not ashamed of sipping wine, but I like to adhere to the polite customs of public drinking even when I’m trying to skirt the law, and pouring an entire bottle of wine into an opaque bottle provides just the right amount of discretion you need. Additionally, this fully counts as decanting, and decanting can be a good way to aerate some wines .

  2. No glass required. Accidentally breaking a glass bottle can happen to even the most responsible and ethical wine drinker. Broken glass is one of the biggest problems when carrying bottled drinks to parks, lakes, and hikes. Stainless steel bottles are not only safer for other people and animals in the environment, but they are also safer for your wine. If you drop it on a rocky path, the bottle may dent but is unlikely to break.

  3. They are reusable. Speaking of not breaking, these bottles are very durable. Stainless steel is easy to clean and does not absorb odors, so it can be washed and filled with different wines for many years. While they may seem expensive at first, keep in mind that you probably won’t need to buy another one for a long time; I still use the Kleen Kanteens I bought 12 years ago. (They’re also good as travel mugs for soft drinks.)

  4. Your wine will be colder. And that’s the whole point. is not it? This summer. The weather is hot, and the only respite is a cool and intoxicating drink. This type of bottle has a divider between two outer walls (hence the name “double wall”). This space is hermetically sealed, so while air is a poor conductor, there isn’t even any air there to transfer heat into your drink. This design is so effective that the wine stayed cold in the refrigerator for up to eight hours. Even after eight hours of repeatedly opening and closing the bottle, the remaining wine inside was still cool, if not cold.

Drinking wine outdoors on a summer day is easier and more convenient with a double-walled, vacuum-insulated bottle. Instead of walking around with a bulky cooler weighed down with ice, simply pour refrigerator-chilled wine into one of these wine-sized bottles. They are essentially portable wine coolers. Don’t forget to invite your friends to bring snacks. Welcome to the future.
